No point putting crosses in as Defoe or VDV are hardly going to cause their defence problems.
I'm surprised Kranjcar didn't test the keeper much. He has proved many times that he has a great shot on him.
VDV seems to think he can shoot at any range or angle. It does get on my nerves when he tries to be a hero and do it all by himself.
Defoe gets a lot of stick, but VDV just drops too deep leaving defoe isolated. Even when VDV is in a forward position he tries a ludicrous shot instead of finding Defoe.
Today we really missed Modric's creativity and Hudd's calmness in the middle. Bale and Lennon are only half as effective when Hudd and Modric are not there to ping balls to them.
Definitely got the team selection wrong, we should have started Pav who scored a header at OT in an FA Cup tie a few years back. He's got much more of a pedigree than Defoe has, and he's an actual physical threat. When will Harry realize that Pav is the best striker we currently have?
Regarding VDV, although he was selfish at times, he was still easily the best player we had on the pitch. If anything Defoe and Lennon had great chances to play him in on several occasions but didn't. You put a Drogba in front of VDV who can hold the ball up and is good in the air, it'd be a complete different story.

Yes but we dont have Drogba playing for us do we so IMO until we have a forward who can hold the ball up VDV is a luxury we simply cannot afford
At least we were beaten fair & square for once.
The way Hearts played you could almost consider last Thursday as a pre-season friendly. Other teams are getting up to speed, last night was our 1st PL game with a makeshift midfield. And at OT vs the champions.
SAF put right Utd's shortcomings at half time and we had no answer, simple as that. Our 1st half performance wasn't all smelling of roses either - several hasty clearances when we could have played out of defence, high balls to JD which he was never going to win ffs.
And to get back on topic - the long shots were obviously Harry's instruction to test the keeper, maybe get a lucky goal from a fumble. As the game went on De Gea's obvious confidence showing, we should have tried something different.
