First game back after injury

Give him time

everytime we had the ball i expected jones to make a mistake or play a terrible long ball

credit to rojo he's played 5 games and don't see him blasting the ball upfield, he can pick out a pass from defence whether it's a short or long pass

He wasn't great yesterday but wasn't the worst either. Januzaj and RVP had nightmares and Shaw's final ball was terrible, though his willingness to get forward and support the attack was good to see.

First game back after injury

....................

I thought Jones had a pretty decent game, to be fair and made one or two very timely interceptions.

At least he is willing to bring the ball out of defence if there isn't a pass on, instead of hoofing it upfield.

And Rafa was just as much to blame for the goal as Jones was, considering he was the one who played the guy onside.

Don't be surprised by Shaw's attacking play. Just checked his Premier League stats to date :

So far he has made 233 crosses, with a grand total of ONE assist.

rafa was marking the wide man

It doesn't matter who Rafa was marking, he was actually watching the line and still failed to spot he was the last man. All he had to do was push up.

That is a basic schoolboy error.

Jones made a gambol by pushing up and got it wrong. I am hoping you actually know enough about football to know what Jones was trying to do. It was just the wrong decision, because Raf was behind him.

Now, our defence has been poor all season long, but if they can hold a team to just tow actual goal scoring chances in a game, then that is progress.

Jones' problem is not ability, he's got that in spades. It's his brain that lets him down. If he can engage his brain before making a decision, he will be a great defender.

Smalling reads the game better than he does which is why I will play him over Jones every time

rafa was marking the wide man

A full back shouldn't ever be a good 3 yards behind the 2 CB's in a wide position when the opposition have the ball and are attacking.

Fullbacks can see right across the line and should always take their positioning from where the CB's are.

Jones made an error, but Rafa was more at fault

smalling rarely makes individual mistakes whereas Jones is just as accident waiting to happen imho.

I think a lot of people give Jones too much credit for making last ditch challenges and throwing himself like a mad man. It reminds me of Rio vs terry debate when both players were at their peak. Rio made defending look easy and terry was an all action type cb. Difference with Jones is Jones ability does not match what he tries to do.

All he seemed to do yesterday was bring it about 10 yards out of defence and then hoof it across the field...

As usual, you watched an entirely different game to me.

I watched him advance down field many a time and slip the ball out to Januzaj or RVP on the edge of the box. He did do one long cross filed ball, but he did not hoof it out of the back like Rojo was doing, or like Smalling does.

Yes.

Glad you agree.

I don't. You're ridiculous. You clearly chose to ignore certain aspects of football matches if they don't suit the rubbish you spout on here.

Is Jones clumsy or do i just make that assumption based on his face?

Jones brought the ball out from the back plenty of times.

What was annoying me a bit though, was that Blind was taking up good positions between the West Brom forwards but Jones and Rojo seemed to not notice the pass on a lot of the time, electing instead to go to the fullbacks.

I think that may be due to WBA midfield closing Blind down pretty quickly. I noticed them doing that quite a few times.

I also noticed Blind getting caught in possession a few times when an easy pass to ADM was on. he seemed to be turning back into trouble.

I must have imagined Jones' good form prior to his injury which granted isn't saying that much but still.

A lot of unnecessary criticism being dished around after last night's game, particularly about our younger players.

Unbelievable really isn't it.

If our defence, which has been poor, can limit every team we play against for the rest of the season to only two chances at goal, I will be very happy.

I know for us it's asking a lot for our defenders to remain fit, but if Rafael, Jones, Rojo and Shaw is LvG's preferred back four, then I hope they're given time to improve together if they're all available, although saying that I'm still not sure on Rojo and my concerns about him at CB go beyond this season.

There is no need for us to rotate, especially in defence given we have only one competition to focus on until January. Stability is something we've not had in defence for quite some time and it would be nice to have it for once.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Blackett returns to the fold given his good form leading up to his sending off at Leicester.
