How does Balotelli deserve to start over Lambert and Borini? What message does it send to persist with someone who puts in as little effort as Balotelli?

The mesages it sends out is that Rodgers is desperately hoping for a miracle to not make him look like an idiot for spending £16mil.

If Rodgers said he was never going to play Balotelli again that might be the case, but dropping him for one match is not a crime and nobody would think of it as such. I also don't think Rodgers is insecure enough to make a team selection based on how it would affect him, so what gives?
