RVP will play

RVP was more brighter against Chelsea, probably the brightest performance of the season for him. Think he deserves to start. Also didn't we play the diamond against chelsea?

We didn't play diamond against Chelsea. We had real width in that match. Januzaj and Di Maria were constantly hugging the touch lines. Januzaj more so however.

If we play diamond on sunday we'll lose by at least 2 goals. It's just not defensive enough and will give a superior team (currently) far too much space.

I see us getting beaten again on Sunday. Doesn't matter how we line up. Sorry

Didn't West Ham play a diamond against City and beat them?

i fear for us with a diamond at the weekend.... too narrow in midfield.

Moyes tried playing a narrow midfield at OT to crowd out Yaya etc... we got murdered down the wings and game over in the first 10 minutes.

Obviously RVP is an option, this is more about the shape. I think Fellaini will play but we might look for a bit more in the middle as Blind looked isolated at times

One thing is for sure, we need to get Di Maria on the ball further up the pitch this weekend. Last weekend he had nowhere to go and was forced into crosses from the middle third

Don't think what Moyes did has any relevance. He could employ the perfect tactical approach and still not get a win away from home against a top side.

I get that, Wonder Man, but RVP will start. I'd be inclined not to as he's slow and has a tendency to miss big chances in big games.

BB, I think Di Maria will have a lot more space to work in behind than against Chelsea due to City's high line.

Same team as last week. Bring on Rooney from the bench if needed

Rooney tends to lose fitness a bit when he isn't playing games and mata had a solid game last week anyway

If Wazza is actually at 100% though, then fine, play him

Play Di Maria down the right and let him have a go at the LB, be it Kolarov or Cliche. Can't see either coping if Di Maria is on it

..................

It depends on the set up.

The diamond formation doesn't have to be narrow surely?

Basically you can have a DM LW RW AM and it is still a diamond.

Not my line up by the way, but;

.......................Fellaini.................................

ADM.......................................... Januzaj

This was our bench against Chelsea:

Lindegaard
Carrick
Herrera
Fletcher
Blackett
Pereira
Wilson

Whether they're fit to start or not having Falcao and Rooney back, as well as Carrick and Herrera nearer to full fitness, gives us much better options off the bench.

Macca

He did play two in a week for England during his ban, and he has been able to train because he wasn't injured.

Word play with titles eh

And City would walk straight through that midfield, VC.

That's why teams usually play three central midfielders and an attacking midfielder when using a diamond.

The advantage with Di Maria, however, is that he's comfortable playing centrally and moving out wide so he has dual purpose.

Who's this Attacking Defensive Midfielder you keep going on about?

If di Maria stays wide in a dimaond, it could work ok.

------------Blind---------------
---Herrera------------Di Maria
-----------Fellaini----------------

Herrera plaing inside right, but helping rafael when needed.

I wouldn't call that a diamond.

Not really diamond shaped is it.

Dazza,

I am not playing silly buggers.

The whole point of a diamond formation is that it is shaped like a diamond.

The clue here is in the name.

Now, this is still a diamond formation.

One of the cm's naturally drops deeper in the formation. Doesn't have to be a dm if you want to be pedantic about playing three cm's anyway, Pirlo is a central midfielder that drops deep when Italy play a diamond formation.

Point being, wingers aren't often used in the formation, certainly not two.

my problem with the 'wide' diamond as such is it leaves us exposed in CM against Yaya (who will undoubtedly up his game) and co.

for me its a 4-5-1 (using the diamond formation you put in your reply to DTKF above with an extra man in the middle) or a 4-4-1-1 with Carrick & Blind holding and the wide players providing the attacking support

even playing those formations i'd rather have Rooney or Falcao up top than RVP if we go with a lone striker
