Winning the CL group is not essential

Its not about qualifying at this stage its about winning your group and avoiding the really big teams in the last 16.

--------------------------------------

I see this type of comment all the time and I still cannot understand why its that important to finish top...

second means you wil lface a big gun, ok, but top means you get a decent enough team, get through that and who will you face in the last 8??

a big gun!

this is basically about when you meet a Bayern, Barca, Real madrid..... how does that matter if its with 16 teams remaining or 8?

even if by some miracle you played rubbish teams who got lucky up to that point..... who will you face in the final?

topping the group is made much more of than it should be.... getting out of the group is all that matters.

Just posted this on another thread.....

and who would you face in the final?

I agree, but the thing is people are angry at result rather than the possibility of finishing second. Even had won the game yesterday, we would have still finished second anyway.

Come top and you'll probably have to face 3 big teams and 1 reasonable team.

Come second and you'll probably have to face 4 big teams.

You're more likely to win the cup with the first scenario.

A lot depends on the draw. Winning the group puts you in a better position to get a more favourable one and then you can gain momentum for when you have to come up against a bigger side (if you do indeed get a favourable draw).

Last season was a strange one because all of the group winners won their second round ties but that rarely happens.

In 2012 Bayern played Basle and Marseille and Real played CSKA and APOEL before they faced each other in the semi.

So while technically what you say is true, there are advantages to winning the group. And it's why every manager and player wants to top it.

You also get to play the second leg at home.

More disappointed at another arsenal collapse rather than delaying another CL knockout.

If winning the CL was as simple as winning the FA Cup Man Utd would have more CL titles than Real Madrid

Finishing top of the group is absolutely essential! This has been established ages ago. The last 4 seasons in the champions league have proved that as we always play the finalist or eventual winner.

These big games in February can also be emotionally draining for the players and manager and going out also has a direct impact on domestic results! Us and United in recent years have suffered for those reasons.

At times I think finishing 4th and exiting Europe in the group stages is better for your domestic season than finishing second and having to play the top 3 sides in world football.

What makes it worse this season is there is a real possibility that Liverpool and City won't exit the group stages meaning we are even more likely tower Bayern or Real.

The good thing is Barca will be second meaning at least Chelsea will have a tough draw.

Wouldn't mind Real that much, but I have a sneaky feeling we will finally get PSG

The lucky buggers would still get drawn against Leverkusen or Benfica no doubt

You can't underestimate how essential it is to have an easier draw in the 2nd round

The group winners usually win the tournament.

Only us, Porto, Inter, Dortmund and Liverpool as runners up, and Real finished runners up in the second group stage once when they won it.

Make of that what you will.

We topped the group during that period, making your statement null and void.

When did we struggle for those reasons?

The season City overcame a 7 point lead with 4 games left to win the league was after you had exited Europe. I can think of other examples but not right now.

posted on 6/11/14

No it didn't. We went out of Europe in March and won our next four games in the league before we played Wigan.

What are the other examples in recent seasons?

Whoever Arsenal plays, they will get dumped out, as sure as night follows day, so it doesn`t really matter where they finish in the group.

Whatever position Spurs get in the league they will always be behind Arsenal, as sure as night follows day, so it doesn`t really matter where they finish in the League.
