Mons, to be honest we needed this it shows us that we will get sides who will (do what we do against better sides) defend properly with discipline, and we will need to know how to handle it.

I think playing the same side over 3 games didn't help and Sunderland played extremely well, but as you point out we never looked like we were in trouble .

Dont know about great but a combination of a tired Chelsea side and a disciplined Sunderland side kept us from scoring. They did what they set out to do. Good job

They didn't do alot, we just stood off and didn't get physical in the right areas. Poor passing from the boys today can't afford de ja vu mid week

Sunderland defended so well. Never lost sight of the plan and ultimately we blinked before they did. Those last 20 minutes you could clearly see us starting to panic, trying to force passes and losing our structure despite still looking solid in our own third, that was impressive from our point of view.

But if I was pushed to say who deserved to win that game quite frankly it was Sunderland.

They were expecting us to tire in the last 20 mins, Poyet said after our midweek game and the fact we have played with the same 11 in three games in 1 week, we would be vulnerable.

Jose got it wrong to a certain extent .

They didn't do anything spectacular. They took advantage of a midweek fixture, put 10 men behind the ball and waited for Chelsea to tire before allowing 1 or 2 men go forward and support the striker in attack.

Makes me wonder why more teams don't do it against you because as stated in the OP, never at one stage did you look like scoring, in fact I thought Sunderland were going to win it.

Bats Sunderland looked better in the last 15/ 20 m, due to heavy fixtures and playing the same side 3 times in one week.

I would say players were tired physically and mentally ..taking 1-2 many touches some times.

Sunderland were well organised but unlike previous ganes Willian and Hazard were not making the pitch wider and made ir very narrow and easy for macks to defend

Out self belief and eagerness to score in the beginning set up the tone for the whole game.

If we were bit nervous or had let them come and attack in the beginning we would have found spaces
