What about people who happen to have a username relating to a striker who not scored a PL goal?

That is allowed

This Gerrard deal is tricky. He clearly wants 2 years but we are offering just 1.

The wages are going to be less but I think 2 years is reasonable. Isn't he still our number one shirt seller?

I think a year is fine for Gerrard. Didn't Giggs have like 4 or 5 one year extensions?

"What sort of contract has Gerrard been offered?
Will he stay or go to the MLS?

Will we make it 2 wins out of 2 tonight?

Was BR wrong to not play Lambert more?"

Largely irrelevant, most clubs dont make much on shirt sales as it is, let alone when players get their commercial cut of named merchandise.

He should be happy with a rolling one year contract, it incentivices him to earn his next contract, and just because he's a club legend he shouldn't be afforded a year sat on the bench, on large wages if he's not good enough.

I'd love to see him stay, but if he's desperate for another payday he should be looking at the MLS.

Yeah its well documented that Giggs & Scholes took reduced wages on their one year contracts...and remember United are a powerhouse and can afford high wages.

posted on 2/12/14

When Giggs & Scholes were at the end of their career they were no where near at the top for Manchester United when it came to marketing. Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and then RVP all took over.

Liverpool on the other hand still have Gerrard as the face of Liverpool. As mentioned before he sells the most shirt and when abroad he is the first person the global support want to see.

Suarez and Torres before were on that level but the likes of Coutinho, Sturridge, Sterling don't have the Gerrard pulling power which is another reason why we went for Mario.

As Insert pointed out...shirt sales arent much.

Dont believe that Ronaldo story.

Starting to think that Gerrard may fancy a year or two at a different club, just as a new challenge before he retires.
Would have thought he would have signed on already by now if he wasn't considering it.

If the managers / owners think Gerrard deserves a new deal then great but i was dissapointed with BR saying after dropping Gerrard - i didnt know it was his 16th anniversary etc" there is no place for emotions in professional football, he was basically saying he would of played him if he would of known.

What has Borini done now

Gerrard to join Beckham in the MLS, I fear we may also lose Howard as he has been sounded out and would be the big homegrown draw for crowds and TV after his WC performances

I think its just early days in the negotiations. Gerrards looking for two years Liverpool for one. I'd imagine if a deal is signed it'll have a trigger for the extention of a certain number of games played. I tihnk he has to except a pay cut now if he wants to stay. Or put in some performances worthy of the wage.

As others have said he shouldnt be paid for the next two seasons based on a level of performance he can no longer reach, legend or not. And to be honest if he loves the club that much it'd be worth him having a word with Fowler about how much he would want for another year at Liverpool.

Lambert has done well, but is by no means the answer. He is slow and lacks movement as a result. Thats not to say he hasnt done well but we need more. Goals from midfield would be a start.

I also dont think we should pin all hopes on the return of Sturridge. Over reliance on one player is the reason we are in this position in the first place.

Couldn't deny Gerrard the chance to go and play in the mls and in particular at somewhere like New York red bulls.

New York is a city like no other and Gerrard would be they're designated player on big money after Henry jacked it in. Can you imagine "Gerrard to Bradley Wright Phillips"

Gerrard should get a 2 year contract on current wage. He may be the highest earner at the club, but has never been paid the astronomical wage of some other footballers. Just because he is not the player of past years his contribution must not be under estimated.

I think most of you are over estimating the amount people get paid in MLS. The top earners on about 60 or 70k per week. If Gerrard was to go to MLS it would likely be for the length of contract over the money. Unless of course he decided to go for the endorsement dollars, but that's never seemed to be his style

What is the club offering in terms of wages?

With significantly lower taxes, and no national insurance if im not mistaken!! A difference of 30% or so on takehome, lower cost of living, their version of VAT is about 3%? Opposed to our 20, far lower house prices, and I'm pretty sure that the big drawback there, the cost of medical care, would be funded completley by the teams, hence a lower wage, probably works out very similar to a 200k wage here.

And that's weekley it doesn't include merchandising money.

Top tax bracket is 40%. Plus social security, insurance etc. cost of living in some American cities is ridiculously high, others very low. Same for house prices. In high demand areas the prices are astronomical.

I really do think the lure of MLS is a little over estimated. The big over seas stars are Henry, Wright Phillips, Keane, Ridgewell etc

Next year there's a couple more, but I still feel Gerrard could earn decent money at a higher lever of football elsewhere
