Was Gerrard elite?

At his best he was certainly world class

And then you put in Giggs who's legacy is based on his longevity rather than significant individual talent

Giggs was genuinely elite in his prime. See the cup against Arsenal.

His status doesn't derive from his longevity. To say that is an insult.

He's been a consistently brilliant midfielder in all of the seasons that he's played, and has been their best player for most of them. World class at his best. For me, I can only applaud him.

Gerrard was world class in his prime........great player , end of discussion.

So many dismiss Giggsy's talent because they never saw any football in the 90's. He was world class then.

I'm a United season ticket holder and not ashamed to say he's up there with Robbo and Keane as the greatest premier league era midfielders. Gerrard .

I hate the coont, obviously, but credit where credit's due.

Deeply saddens me that the guy I watched growing up as a teenager is about to leave the club he gave everything for. He was simply phenemonal at his peak and I wouldn't be able to pinpoint one best moment because he provided so many especially in the big games. From Istanbul to Cardiff he single handedly at times dragged us out of problems and that too usually not playing in the best of Liverpool sides. The Premier League title will always remain a blemish on his prestigious CV and I shudder to think how he felt after that Chelsea game last year but the fact remains he is a special player and a Kop legend.

Well put mate 👍.
Even as a Spurs fan I did enjoy watching him back then. Was a wonderful player.

Wonderful player. I can't think of any other non Spurs player who has given me as many memorable football moments as he has.

Deserved to lift a PL trophy but I'm sure he'll suffice with the others he's won and the manner in which he achieved them.

Huge hole at Anfield and Melwood(?) next season I'd imagine. Not sure how they'll replace that presence. Think they might struggle for a good while yet.

Only a moron would see him as less than world class. Him, Scholes and Lampard.

He has been overrated for a while now and his poor performances in the WC with the likes of Rooney is the main reason England is disrespected on the international stage

He was pretty damn good to be fair. No Gazza, mind.

A fair argument, but there is a reason both players are legends in their own lifetimes.

All a matter of opinion

I thought Beckham was fairly rated, in that a lot of people at the time thought he was overrated. Then he was good, good enough to sign for Real, and he was underrated before, then he went to USA and was overrated again.

David Bentley could've done that if he wasn't a sillyarse. The likes of Kaka and Figo put him to shame.

I would argue there has not been an ELITE British player in a long time.

Bale is the closest and he isn't a shoe in yet.

All the prem greats come from foreign shores

I see mention of gazza, Jesus wept now that player was overrated, did he ever have a complete season of greatness?

Feck no. Bits and pieces of magic but not much else, I would say its a fair argument to suggest he didnt even come close to Matt le tissier who was a genius, albeit a lazy one.

Shearer.

I maintain Gazza had more talent than Beckham, it was his off the field issues what done him in. Le Tissier was definitely overrated because of his set pieces. Barely a PL legend let alone an elite player.

Shearer is an interesting case, a perfect mould for a Premier league footballer, but this is one of the problems when gauging how good British players have been in the last few decades, very few have tried their hand elsewhere and all have failed on the international stage.

Gazza had great talent, but as above, did he ever put a great season together? Does anybody say 'wow, remember gazza in 1989/90'? No, they say, remember gazza crying at the world cup.

Now Beckham had less talent but his desire is unrivalled, he was excellent with what he had and even succeeded to a degree on foreign shores.

Le Tiss is a strange one, i know him first hand and his ability is extraordinary, and he did single handedly save Saints in several seasons, one in particular, now think back, how many clubs outside the top six can you say had a player that completely dictated their teams season?
