You're wasting your time. I was busting blood vessels the first few days trying to explain this. I worked out its better to ignore the imbeciles who read newspapers and make their conclusions based on the opinion of another rather than the actual person himself.

Exactly mate only people who watch most lfc games will be able to tell that its time he moved on. the club is trying to move forward as well and SG departure will also help in fastening that procedure. Sure we will miss him, but we got to move on. Did people think he was going to play for us until he was 60?

He had to eventually retire or leave, so what is so surprising.

Its quite funny that a lot of people were telling you he's holding you back and now you are all idiots for letting him go...

There were comments made regarding saving him for the big games, maybe from Aldridge... his point being you don't have to play Gerrard every game but he would want to be part of the big games, like the Real game for example.

Whether that would have been worth it is another question.

I will be glad that I don't have to watch him continually step up and score free kicks for you after this season for one!

The media need a narrative, the best one they could have had is had Gerrard stayed into next season, and not been playing, then it would be far worse then what we are seeing now.

Imagine we played someone at home, lost the game and Gerrard didn't play, Shearer would be on MOTD banging on about how can you not play gerrard, the focus would turn to that, then say we lost another game you'd have some stupid fans calling for Brendan to be sacked and for Stevie to get the job despite having no coaching badges.

So since Stevie is leaving, thus denying the media the above narrative they need something to write about now, so the best available narrative is "why didn't Liverpool do enough to keep Gerrard".

What will be most annoying is how Brendan will have to speak about Gerrard in every press conference between now and the end of the season but it won't be nearly as bad as things would be if he was still here next season but not playing.

Best move for him and the club

Exactly Carra, its the best move for the club and player. I dont see the need to make it into a scandal like the media currently are. Sky sports constantly showing gerrard stats and comparing it to other players, will probably do a comparison between Stevie and johnny Wilkinson next.

Media blow everything up into a scandal.

The rags can turn a fart into a full blown hurricane.

Totally agree with the OP here.

We will miss him of course, his influence on and off the pitch, he's been the figurehead of the club for so long it is hard to imagine the club without him.

But a bit part Gerrard, sitting on the bench won;t do anyone any good IMO. Gerrard wouldn't intentionally cause a fuss, he would say he's happy etc. but you know he wouldn't be happy being a squad player, it's not in his nature, his presence alone would give the media a narrative to run with.

He also gets out of the glare of being LFC captain in a city that is like a fishbowl. That must appeal to him and his family too.

Thanks Emre.

I think we must groom Can into Stevies role for next season if we can not get a world class ready made one.

On that, why would he say that he would have signed a contract f it had of been set in front of him at the beginning of the season? Who exactly does that benefit by saying that?

Well he has avoided making a big deal of it I do believe Gerrard is slightly annoyed at how it all went down...

Hence the comment about would have signed, he couldn't help but put a little of it out there.

Thats my theory anyway, not sure how true it is.

Yeah Saf, Gerrard does seem annoyed, he just doesnt want to be honest because he is still at the club. His real story cold be told once he leaves.

posted on 9/1/15

Look at Chelsea and Lampard, he could probably still be doing a job for them but he was let go and i don't see too many CFC fans complaining despite him scoring a few goals for City.

You should have had a quick look at our board before writing that

You just wanna hope he doesnt sign a short term deal with another prem club, and before you say he never will Lampard was also reported at the time as saying he would never play for another PL club.

Gerrard is less likely in fairness...

Lampard had already played for another premier league club and was bought from them to play for Chelsea. Gerrard is from the academy.

I suppose it isn't impossible but I think its very unlikely.

You just never know is all im saying.

Fans expect them to behave as fans, and even though Gerrard is a Liverpool he has a career and a family to look after and they come 1st (same as Lampard)

yeah valid point, I guess he was pointing out that he still feels he has enough to be playing week in week out for us and had he been offered a deal in the summer he'd have signed, he's probably a bit annoyed he didn't get it after having a good season last year.

But the comments about the talk he had with Brendan are important, he said himself that he didn't expect to have a talk about his game time being shortened so soon, after that talk, coupled with no deal in the summer, and only a 1 year deal with less money being offered he probably thought it was best to just leave, and I'm delighted it's to the MLS, would find it very difficult to see him play for any other club in Europe especially in the PL.

posted on 9/1/15

TBH, I personally am far more gutted about losing Suarez than SG.

posted on 9/1/15

Had he signed a deal in the summer we would still have problems now because he would expect to be starting every game.

That's the crux of it, he doesn't want to be a squad player and we can't (rightly) promise him anything other than that.

The rest is just media hot air, and former players who chase the easy buck like Carra and Murphy are as culpable for that as anyone else.

Of course he would have signed in the summer, he was guaranteed games at that stage. It wasn't until later this season that he was told he wasn't.

^^ this..and a lot of local journalists saying the same. However surely it would have been worse signing a new contract and then being told after that you arnt going to play the games you want to. That would just show a lack of respect to Gerrard. Everyone has been honest with each other, SG,BR, the club, the fans...seems the world doesn't like that any more!

Agree scouse heart it's all very open and transparent. Like anything things could have gone differently, but when you consider how bad this could have gotten it's all extremely well.

Made me laugh when Shearer claimed that it was crazy that we wouldn't give him a contract. Well, we did offer him a contract. We gave him the chance to stay.
Both Gerrard and Rodgers have come out and said that they had a conversation where Gerrard wouldn't play as many games next season. Gerrard wants to play every game so he is going to America. It's pretty simple.

I turned it off when he started saying it. He seems to lack intelligence.

And you can only imagine how much worse it would be next season if we played and Gerrard didn't get a game, every English pundit would be banging on about how Gerrard must play etc.

Would be a nightmare for Gerrard, Rodgers and the club in general.
