We had 5 players out of position today. FIVE.

When does Jose ever set up with his star midfielder upfront, his striker in midfield and one of his midfielders at the back?

With the injuries recently.....the square pegs excuse was a valid one.....but today there was no excuse.

The experimenting with this system has to stop. 3-5-2 just doesn't suit us. And it's never really worked in the PL either.

20 odd seasons of PL football and what teams has ever achieved great things playing it? None.

As you can see from my name, I'm totally against the formation S.E

For me as an opposing manager, play with width and you worry a 3-5-2 instantly. You bring the wider centre halves into positions they don't wanna be in and you double up on the wing backs, therefore forcing your midfield to work much harder than it should.

I liken it to playing poker but telling the other players your hand its so predictable.

What p'd me off the most is that we had no injury excuse to pull and a fully fit squad but yet that was the best we could do... embarrassing.

I felt optimistic but now I'm royally furcked off because we are now only a point above Arsenal and we are dangerously close to missing out on CL football if we persist on playing like this.

The writing has been on the wall but we have been too ignorant to read it...

Totally agree. Not qualifying for CL is not an option this season. It's worth £100m+ to the club. We can't afford to miss out on that again.

£60m in CL tv money. £30m in Sponorship. £10m in gate receipts. Plus more.

Also......if we fail to get top 4.......We could have a few players with twitchy bums. DDG being in that group.

The problem today was not the 3 at the back or the 2 wing backs. It was the midfield and attack

Like SE said we had 5 players out of position, where as all Arsenals whole squad are out of position after all they are used to being in 4th!

It was wrong all over the pitch apart from DDG.

And if you thought Luke Shaw and Valencia are fine playing wing back, then I give up. Neither have the required quality or intelligence to play that role.

Shaw should be playing left back in a back 4. Valencia should be a reserve at best.

Defensively Southampton where fantastic, they just seem to nullify you and Schniderlin was fantastic.

Was he bragging or complaining?

S.E ... two seasons out CANNOT be an option ... The challengers for the top 4 are weak this year so we need to exploit and to not do so would be a TRAVESTY.

MuuD... do you not think that playing such a formation impacted on an ineffective performance? Playing 3 at that back with a side that pressed from the front meant that we were unable to build attacks from defence?

Regardless, whichever way you look at it, that was a pathetic attacking display and hardly a statement of intent for our top 4 ambitions.

Five players out of position, and there was me thinking it was a LvG cunning plan.

If we had played proper midfielders, it would have made a difference. Smalling and Jones carried the ball forward on numerous occasions but there was no one in midfield to do anything about it.

Southampton did not trouble us the whole game so the defending was not the issue. I seriously worry about some of you, right now it is the formation you have all latched on to when the answer is staring you in the face.

Rooney
Mata
RvP
Carrick
Di Maria

They were all crap today.

Off boil and just about to coagulate.

MuuD they were all crap today sure, I cannot argue that in their favour.

If you are happy to see the 3-5-2 and square peg's in round holes business and you are content to put up with it, I wonder what hope you are clinging on to. Apart from Liverpool at home, a game in which we were still very open, we haven't played a single match with that formation where we have looked totally convincing.

Rooney and Di Maria are not in the right positions to hurt the opposition and Shaw is never a wing back. He is a solid full back who would benefit with a winger infront of him. I was apprehensive as soon as it was confirmed it was three at the back again.

LvG needs to cut out the stubbornness !

Mudd, spot on our play in the final 3rd of the pitch was poor, however Smalling should of done far better in the build up to the goal.
