Time to give Townsend a bit of credit. He was the only one who delivered good crosses into the box.
Eriksen had stinker as well. He should be taken off corner duty.
Townsend was better second half, but still has no end product.
He put two good balls in for Dier that could have been goals. That was the closest we looked to scoring other than the pen itself.
No E in in truly, but you may need one after that game,Sandy.
If we score once at their place they will have to get 3 so I'm pretty confident we'll make it through. That said it was an awful performance.
For a team chasing top4 to have only 1 attacking midfielder in Eriksen our ranks is truly shocking. Our midfiled options is overloaded with more defensive type players. God forbid Eriksen getting injured or off form. Poch should realise we are seriously lacking and address it. We lacked the guile to open Sheffield up and they will be licking their licks having our mob at their gaffe next week.
Anyone else have problems on here?
I expect Spurs to score at least one, sometimes it is easier for these teams to give it their all away from home. I think it will be easier for Spurs second leg, but they simply have to cut out the silly mistakes like given the ball away on countless occasions, or getting caught in possession at the back, trying to dribble the ball out.
Keep getting page reloaded...........
Meh. It was a cup game, hard fought as should be the way, with the right result in the end

If they go on the attack we'll have a field day.
Funny how when we do not do as well as expected we have always had a shocking performance. It was our fault because we didn't play well.
I said on a thread last night that we can play against craft, we struggle against graft. And that is what Sheffield Unted did tonight, grafted and didn't allow us to play.
Sandy, Davies didn't have an off game tonight, Campbell-Ryce was full of confidence and ran him ragged.
Agreed we kept giving the ball away in defensive areas, and kept getting caught in possession but that was because of their graft forcing the errors.
When will Spurs and their manager learn about the psychology of smaller (lower ranked) teams playing above themselves when they get the chance on the bigger stage.
We need pace and we need creativity and we are woefully short of both.
wrong system by poch, eriksen outwide kane too deep ade up top not good didnt start right no pace, speed, ended faster, but not good enough, finally Vertonghen when interviewed after the match said he hadnt expect ed that Sheff U would play like that, so who does, dont the watch other games
Just me, Bill
Whilst I will agree the winger had a good game, Davies gave the ball away and lost the ball on countless occasions. I have nothing against him getting skinned by a winger, but losing the ball unneccesary time after time is unforgiveable. Walker did it a couple of times as well. It just invites unwanted pressure.

Bit disjointed tonight, Kane and Eriksen a bit below par which I can let them off for tonight.
Lots of games at the moment so a win and no goal conceded sets us up okay.

----------------------------------------------------------------------The point I was making above yours Dave was they it is not good watching Sheffield United play, other than purely just so you can say you have. They are not performing particularly well in their own league.
What we need is some understanding that teams like Sheffield United do not play like they usually play, they are on a bigger stage, their adrenalin is high, they get to balls they do not get to week in week out in their own league. They can run faster, longer, because their energy levels are increased because of the bigger game.
Why do you think that lower ranked teams often knock out highert ranked competitors. Because on that particular day, that particularly night, they play above themselves and it is up to the management of Spurs to understand this and drill it into the players.
Was a very poor performance but youve got to give huge credit to Sheff utd. I certainly under estimated them even with their cup pedigree.
We didnt play with enough urgency our build up was slow and too many of our passes were telegraphed.
We have learned that we cant play Mason and Stambouli together at home, too similar and no creativity. Davies was poor tonight and he is usually dependable. Still prefer Rose's dynamism down the left.
Vorm didnt have a save to make but he was driving me mad how slow he was taking with his goal kicks. -6
Walker was poor, too many sloppy passes. -5.5
Dier was solid and composed very impressive - 7
Vertonghen, did ok, unflustered display -7
Davies was awful, poor defending and sloppy in possession. Rose offers so much more from LB - 5
Stambouli.hustled and bustled in midfield no creativity though. 6
Mason looked rusty -5.5
Townsend my motm. Took his penalty with confidence and at least offered some dynamism to our play - 7.5
Eriksen - love the guy but he was awful tonight, nothing came off for him - 5
Kane - Again worked tirelessly, made some marauding runs. Much better playing the num 9 position - 6.5
Adebayor - Lucky to not see red, looked rusty - 5.5
Subs -
Dembele - turned over the ball well and kept us moving - 6
Soldado - great control in the box to get penalty - 6.5
Paulinho - Kept it simple when he came on -6

Precisely my point, which is why they were not prepared properly.
Townsend...................Dynamism is only good if channeled correctly. For me he is a bit of a headless chicken with little or no end product. He NEVER gets to the by line to cross & those step overs he does are cringeworthy.
It was obvious where we failed last night & that was in the tempo of play, we sauntered around as though it was a training session & Sheffield were content to let us have up to 85% possession at times.
We needed to up the tempo & run at their players, one of several things should happen.....................if the players get fouled the we get a free kick & they risk more bookings and possible cards.
More free kicks mean potentially more opportunities to score. There is also a greater chance of breaking through the defence by quick passing between our forwards.
I agree that our players should have known what to expect, especially as United have beaten a number of PL teams in the past year or so!
