I'd say the series would have been a draw, or maybe the Aussies shading it.

This is on the basis that England's bowling attack in 2005 was pretty much at its peak, while the 2011 bowling attack has some way to go to be at the height of its powers.

Also importantly, Flintoff being a genuine all-rounder in that series meant England could play with 5 front-line bowlers.

Swann is clearly better than Giles
Anderson is maybe the equal of Jones
Flintoff and Harmison are both faster than Broad and Tremlett, and in addition Flintoff had that 'charisma' factor that somehow made difficult situations look manageable. Broad's still young, and I hope he develops that in the future, but in the strict terms of the article he's not there yet.

Then the 2005 side had Hoggy too. Hoggy is miles better than Trott, KP or any other 5th bowler Strauss can throw the ball to - in fact not far behind Anderson and Jones IMHO, but did the job of stock bowler in the 2005 side.

Without the bowlers being tip-top I think the Aussie 2005 batting line-up does significantly better than it did.

Also, since you say it's being played now, presumably we can't expect McGrath to be unlucky enough to turn his ankle on a stray ball during a warm-up again...
