The problem was they had some really good games in 1&2 that just couldnt compete with GTA. So in what seems like a moment of madness they decided to take the franchise in a, well, mad direction. It just keeps getting more and more absurd. I wish they could go back to its roots as I preferred those first 2 to GTA.
RIP Saints Row
first two are like the GTA III and Vice City of Saints Row, the peak IMO.
GTA doesn't really do it for me anymore. Have to put more time into 5 though.
I've got 2, 3 & 4 and 2 has by far the best map. Each place is memorable and you can navigate yourself around it without the map, as you remember landmarks and the likes. Very similar to Vice City & San Andreas in that regard.
3 & 4 have such a dull, boring map. Nothing of note, and constantly have to refer to the map to navigate. Much like GTA IV.
Also much like in GTA, the music has got worse as the series went on. Saints Row 2 had a number of good songs, 3 had barely a couple and I'm not sure 4 has any decent music at all.
However I thought 3 started pretty slowly but really got better as you went along. The DLC was also pretty fantastic. Bought 4 but never really got into it, will get back to it someday.
Problem with Saints row, was that it was IMO a 2part game. The story was complete after number 2 finished! If fans didn't compare the 2 (although I preferred the first to all but vice city), then the makers wouldn't have to compete, as it would be a standalone entity.
Without the comparisons we have a slick game, a solid storyline and unique gameplay. What we saw after 2, was an attempt to breathe life into something that was alive and kicking.

3 killed the series. 4 just shat on the grave.

Disagree. 3 was out there but it still had the Saints Row core IMO. 4 just plssed all that away.
both GTA and SR are traash to me now.. neverl iked SR's humor after playing the old GTA games..
GTA's irony and satire really fell off after San Andreas - I'd rather just play the old GTA games..
also the gameplay for both is the same as GTAIII.. repetitive and boring stories just make me pass on them
