I thought we played our wingback system very poorly against Utd. They set their stall out to crowd the centre of midfield and block Coutinho and Lallana.
...................
How you played it on Sunday was how we had been playing it early on in the season.
The two wingbacks were really playing as full backs.
When we played it in preseason, we were playing it how it should be played.

Very true and Utd had the same problems as we did on Sunday. Not so much a case of the wrong system but more of Utd's players being better than our on the day.
So far Markovic has been by far the best player in the wingback position for us this season. Very surprising but also a boost.

Having Sterling playing in the Liverpool half for the entire game really was a let off for us.
He is your one player who really can hurt us.
We don't necessarily need to change the back 3, but something needs to change as it seems teams have worked out how we've played this formation so far. The signs have been there against Swansea and Soton, and eventually against Utd
I agree with VC, the wing backs were too deep, we've really missed Ibe in that respect. Once that happens the 3 forwards have to drop deep to collect the ball, then have no options in front of them and out attacking play worsens. Swansea also marked Allen and the other CBs, meaning Sakho didn't have any options to pass to and other teams will use this as well
Also don't understand why BR didn't swap Can and Skrtel, who was better equipped to cope with Fellaini
Allens been ok but we need Lucas back, that added protection gives our attacking players a bit more freedom. Would drop Lallana for Ibe/Marko next match, play Sterling and Studge up top with Coutinho behind and Lucas and Hendo in the middle. Ibe/Marko should be out wide on the right, not Lallana or Johnson
Who is liverpools top goal scorer?
Who is your biggest goal threat in this formation? Sturridge seems to play very deep lately.

Fellaini would have followed Can even if they swapped and having Fellaini winning headers centrally would have been more dangerous.
We dont press effectively anymore especially in big games and Can, Moreno perhaps Lallana seemed to be awed by the occasion but this article is not made from the premise of our last match. I've thought about it for a while even during our good run so its not about United but more about our overall play.
Nowadays you find one or two attackers pressing and others far behind allowing the oppositions four defenders and probably a DM to play around and launch attacks. The wingbacks are usually in between where a winger and a full back should be and space will be left in behind, between the wingback and left or right CB. You find you leave gaps because the pressing is not harmonious.
Last season and in some games this season we have been very good in that respect, but not so in a lot of the games we have been poor in.

Also, about the United game, I think perhaps Rodgers showed United a little too much respect in the way he set up the team from the beginning and Stevie was off within a minute of him changing it. With the diamond, 11 men and 20 minutes on the clock I would have fancied our chances.

Not really. We haven't really been playing wingbacks. They have been part of a four man midfield and attacking most of the time. Instead against you in look more like wing backs as we could get the ball. You were spreading it well and not allowing us to press by hitting it long.
If they had played more like full backs your two goals wouldn't have happened as they both happened with Moreno in the fullback position.
