He wanted Guardiola. When he said no, Rafa was his only option. I'd like to think that's what happened and Benitez was never first choice
Benitez brought you guys the UEFA Cup, like him or not.
I don't doubt he did not want to hire Robbie. Robbie was not supposed to win the CL. I think he was supposed to try his best until a new man could come along and leave with a hand shake and no need to pay off.
Yeah he never wanted Robbie but he must have realised you can't sack a manager after winning CL.
Have always wondered where we would have come in the league that season if Robbie was never fired.

Exactly, RDM made it so that he had no choice but to give him the job. Any other decision would have been clearly untenable. He obviously didn't fancy him but sometimes in life people's achievements are so incredible that they simply cannot be denied the opportunity to undertake the job, despite misgivings that he may have had.
