I think a lot of the form can be explained by our annual slump. We're not in the running for anything so as usual our lazy caants of players cant be assed. It does raise concerns over Poch and his ability to motivate the players.
I hope he can sort it but only a couple games left now. Hate the thought of us sacking him and getting yet another new manager so I hope we stick with him for the time being and see what he can do over time.
until we sort out our clown defence it doesn't matter how many games we do or don't play, we wont achieve anything
To be honest we've been suffering from a hangover since Fiorentina knocked us out of the cup, we've barely managed a good performance since then. As a group the players form has dropped since then too (particularly Eriksen). Could be that tiredness is a factor. When you're winning games you don't feel tired etc.
Mid to upper table clubs drop into a comfort zone, nothing to play for apart from pride which in most cases is short in supply, this is where it takes a exceptional coaching/management team to motivate players, unless of course the also have a comfort zone,if that's the case the're unfit for purpose.

It shouldn't make a difference.
However, it seems Poch shares the same dream as me :A season OUT of the Europa.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Trouble is, to do that you have to want to not win games (to drop down the table), which is such a ridiculous concept that it makes my brain hurt.
There's clearly something not quite right about the current set up, but I wouldn't say it was the Europa league.

I agree. But the players should have realised that if they really tried, top 4 was up for grabs - so that should have been motivation enough. Failing that, as you say, it's down to the coach/management to drive that home.
It's just so disappointing that we failed on both levels. This mentality has to change.

The stats for the last 10 PL games versus the previous 10 PL as noted in my OP, do not suggest that we fair any better when we're out of the EL

I think he's been doing it pretty well for weeks now

The problem is, I think you may be right.
If it ever came out that Poch was trying to lose games (even for a potentially better long term goal), I'd want him out of the club immediately. It's just not right.
Really hope it's not true, and that he can sort us out next year, the end to this season has been really quite depressing.

The advantage every other team in the Europa League outside the Prem has is that they only have to play in the Europa League, they don't have domestic leagues. The winner of the Europa League plays about 4 games a season compared to Prem teams who have to play at least twice in the league at the weekend. The Prem teams are all really poor and struggle to put squads together that can last the season. Where as in the likes of Spain every team in the league is rich. UEFA is racist to England.

Whatever way we coat it, we can't do both.

Agreed. But the point is that we should be able to do both.

Well obviously...but the last few managers have all found their own way of making it a pointless exercise.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just think that players should be able to cope with EL football and the PL. The main objective for a club like ours is to win trophies. Unfortunately we're not going to win the PL anytime soon, that leaves the two domestic cups and a European trophy all of which we should go all out to win.

We don't have enough strength in depth to remain competitive domestically and in Europe. I think that's quite clear to see. We've barely got 11 players we can rely on let alone 18-20

anyone see poyet on goals on sunday ? basically said its not possible to compete across 4 comps unless you have an elite squad, which we clearly don't.
the likeliest outcome is that you will fall short in all of them. but you cant really write off competitions either...
