Sir Clive Woodward - next France coach?

First of all this would only be post World Cup, it would be an odd choice given how long Woodward has been out of the game for. I also get the impression that other nations see him as a pure Anglo-phile, and not suited to non English sides.

Having said that who could be worse than Saint-Andre and Lievremont given the talent available to them? Simply shoot Basteraud and as if by magic you brign three extra players into the game - how hard can it be?

Seriously, though, France's record for teh last few years - excluding the last World Cup - has been awful given the talent available to them and its just not good enough. Given his knowledge I wonder if Wilkinson might fancy it next time round?

I was told recently by someone who might know such things that it wouldn't be a big shock to see Saint-Andre ditched BEFORE the world cup.

Now, how French would that be?

Wouldn't surprise me with the French

Sorry, haven't got any further wtith sevens info I'm afraid. I think the guys I asked are up to their necks with organising the Wooden Spoon International Tag event. You could come down to Telford on 6th June and see it all in action? I could introduce you to some of the great and the good. I'm told that, among other former B&I Lions, the next president of the RFU will be in attendance, so some flesh pressing might be in order.

More importantly, I could buy you a pint.

It would seem a strange appointment. Can't argue with his record to be fair but given his extended period out fo the game i don't see what he can bring. Kind of like Ian McGeechan in so far as he would be living off past glories won in a previous era. Rugby has changed a hell of a lot. What woodward brought was ultra professionalism and organisation in a time when there were only a few teams in the world who treated rugby with such professionalism. These days things have changed. Mind you, the French could use a little professionalism, so perhaps he would be a really good choice.

There's kids with learning difficulties coming from Dublin for the Wooden Spoon Tag Festival.

Get yourself on that ferry. I'll even pick you up from Holyhead - and I'll buy you a pint.

You wonder how the French can be so poor, I think they need a coach who isn't afraid to put a few noses out of joint - perhaps someone like Michael Cheika or to a lesser degree Richard Cockerill, though I have to say I don't like either of them as individuals

Cockers coaching the French . Now I'd pay to watch that.

BTW, you're invited to the Wooden Spoon Tag Festival as well. I'll buy you a pint if you come.

I get the impression that guys like him and Olivier Merle would get on rather well - both stubborn to the point of insanity - could Cockerill be a closet bleu?

Guess you must be pretty happy with the Saints right now?

Sure am SARS - champions.

Last year I said Sarries were champions and the year before, through very gritted teeth, I said Leicester were champions even though Sarries won the post season moneybags nonsense.

So this season Saints are champions, end of.

Went to Welford Road on Saturday thinking that if we got away with a 20 point defeat I'd be happy. So coming within a missed conversion of a bonus point was very gratifying. I'm not sure if that was Leicester's A game we saw. If it was, then they have a problem and I'll be happy to watch (on telly of course) our big guns smash them in the final if they get there. If it wasn't their A game, then we have to believe that they didn't want to stick it up the Saints, depleted or not. If that's the case then they really have a problem.

PS. You might recall that I also said Glasgow would win the Pro 12.

Appreciate it show, but I don't think the tournament will happen now. Too many slackers not organising it therefore we've missed a great chance to increase the number of young kids playing the sport. Shame.

Yeah, I know what you mean Show, the whole thing about having a league is long term consistency. Having said that, the Saints - Saracens game last year was absolutely brilliant.

Who do you think will win the various playoff tournaments - I guess Northampton, Glasgow and Toulon will go in as favourites - followed by Bath, Munster and Clermont, but its Gloucester - Connacht where my focus is right now - winner to play either Bordeaux Begles or Racing Metro

To be perfectly honest mate, I couldn't give a ratsarse who wins what. Saints and Glasgow are champions and that's that. As for France, don't follow it largely because it is a Mammonfest where the biggest budget (probably Toulon) prevails

I seem to recall last year it was 6 from each league plus 1 x Italian team (Treviso) and the Anglo French playoff winner (wasps). Honestly thought Connacht were out of it, and how are Glaws still in if Quins and Sale finished above you.

That's a big pity. Sadly, it usually takes several people following through on promises and commitments to make things happen. Pull out one and the whole thing falls apart.

Ignore them and keep doing good work, you'll get there in the end, even if not this time.

Hi there,

On the European Rugby Champions Cup bit, its the 7th side from the Pro-12 (Connacht) - assuming one of the Italian sides finish below this, the 7th side from the Top 14 - either Racing Metro or Bordeaux and would be the 7th side in the Aviva (Sale I think). However, as Gloucester won the Challenge Cup, they take Sale's place and now face Connacht, with the winner then facing the French side.

Fingers crossed!

Yeah I was looking forward to organising something like what we were proposing - as ever someone had the bright idea but didn't know how to make it happen and asked everyone else!

That sounds like good news for your boys, but it all smacks of a bit of making it all up as you go along. I'd be right pis5ed off if I was a Sale fan - as a Connacht man would have been if Embra had beaten Glaws.

If this great game of ours is not careful it might end up a right mess as it marches towards Mammon. It could end up like this

Guy Noves takes over as France coach, so Woodward misses out.
