Definitely Diaf.
If we could keep
.........................DDG (Courtois)
...............Smalling(Cahill)... Jones(Terry)...Blind(Azpi)
................Carrick (Matic).Herrera (Fabregas)
fit next season, similarly to Chelsea's defensive consistency this season, we'll be right up there, signings or not.
Blind won't be the first name on the team sheet. What he will be is the go to man to fill in for a variety of positions and not be an absolute liability. He will be an important squad member, hopefully for several years to come. I love him as that but if he was the first name on the team sheet, I would be concerned.
What I do like about him is his communication. Particularly when Blackett or McNair play. You can see him constantly talking to them and helping direct them which is nice to see.
In terms of the OP, for our current squad, it would need to be Carrick. We have seen Valencia cover right back, even Young cover left back, we can cope without Rooney, ADM etc but Carrick is one we have struggled to fill in for.
Which is a concern because as LVG has pointed out, we really need someone who can play that position and I'd hope is someone who is essential to the team in terms of their ability.
So Carrick currently but I think that speaks volumes about the quality of our starting 11. Our squad however isn't too bad, we just lack some quality to help make us consistent.
On a side note, if all teams/squads were given the all clear, injury wise, for one season... Who do you think would win?
Possibly Arsenal?

We would start slowly as players got to know their roles and then finish like a train.
City/Arsenal would be scary. City would edge it as I see them buying some big players.
Chelsea would finish on the same points as this season.

To me he's a downgrade on Daren Fletcher.

Then you are an absolute idiot.

That's not very nice but I should have been clearer. I meant a downgrade on the DF before his illness.

Blind is still better.
Fletch was average at best, and only mustered a season and a half where he was decent.

A fit squad for 38 games would mean 38 x Toure, Silva and Aguero.
A second season Mangala plus purchases that would improve both flanks.
And they'd be unbeatable - until we came good.

Really not seeing anything in Blind that's better than Fletcher at his best. Blind has actually impressed me more in defence than midfield.
I'd sooner have Carrick, Herrera, Mata and even Fellaini in our midfield.
I think Blind will be one of those players who will get a lot of game time but won't have a set position as such.
He has impressed me this season wherever he has played and considering it is his first season with United has done very well IMO.
Having said that I don't think that I would want him in my best first XI if (big if as well) everyone is fit and on form but I would have no issues either if he came into the first XI even during our most difficult games. I trust him to do a job for us and I am sure he would.

............
He reads the game better, is a better passer, and is always looking for the ball.
Fletch ran around a lot.
Darren Fletcher is the most overrated footballer in the history of Manchester United. He was never above average for a starting midfielder at a top club.

Blind? Really? A squad player at best. Not a good passer of the ball, little pace, little skill. Not even a great tackler. To me he's a downgrade on Daren Fletcher. He just has better fitness and youth on his side to improve.

I guess that was Fletch with the Hollywood Pass to RVP in The World Cup....ffs m8, Blind is a fine player, give him a break.
