I find that film, especially the first act, really hard to watch. Everything with Alex and his droogs at the beginning and his various home invasions are just really difficult to get through. And I wouldn’t say the scenes post-Ludovico are a walk in the park either
I think it is a really effective movie, and it works on a cerebral as well as a visceral level but I can’t love it. Only watched it front to back maybe twice.

But I like Full Metal Jacket a lot, maybe in my top five Kubricks which is a tough list.

Where would you rank The Shining? Asking out of sheer interest as I was talking to someone about it earlier.

The Shining was on BBC only a couple days back. So it might be on iPlayer if you fancy rewatching it
I would put it high up there, just ahead of Full Metal Jacket.
Im terms of my favourites from the ones I have seen
1) Barry Lyndon
2) 2001: A Space Odyssey
3) Eyes Wide Shut
4) The Shining
5) Full Metal Jacket
6) Dr Strangelove
7) Paths of Glory
8) A Clockwork Orange
9) Spartacus
10) Lolita
11) Killers Kiss
Never seen Fear and Desire or The Killing

Nice one
Actually haven't seen any of top three (to my great shame). They'll be on my watch list this week.

I did and loved it.
To be clear I obviously appreciate Kubricks movies but they just aren't always for me. Love The Shining. Love the boot camp in FMJ. After that its like parts and pieces but not necessarily stuff I look forward to watching.
2001 is pretty famous though
-----
Definitely, that's the one I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen yet.

I found It to be dreadful...despite its hype
2001 certainly isn't for everyone. I only watched it for the first time all the way through about five years ago. My advice would be to close all the curtains and to watch it with headphones on to completely immerse yourself in it. I found it very trippy, especially with the musical score.
Eyes Wide Shut is good but I remember watching it for the first time and thinking that there was something missing but not being able to put my finger on it. Of course there are the theories that part of the movie was omitted after Kubrick's untimely death before it's release which gave full control of editing to the studio. Up until then Kubrick had full control.

Full Metal Jacket is basically perfect until they deploy and then its good but not quite as good as it got in training

Yup
Gonna watch ‘Drive’ tonight with Gosling, not seen it before and I don’t really know why. Any good?
It's one of those you can only appreciate properly if you have a cinematics degree I think. Good film though
