💥 THURSDAY THEME UPDATE 💥

Sorry about the delay folks. Had a death in the family. Let’s get down to it tho. There are many many many battle scenes in film and TV…but mainly film due to budget restrictions.

What are your top 3 favorite battle scenes NOT containing modern guns. I think maybe drawing the line at the musket would be best. Even then I’d prefer it wasn’t included.

What exactly is the reason for your choices and what makes them any more special than say Lord of the Rings: Return of the King -- Pelennor Fields where the army of the dead show up and wipe the floor with everyone in like 13 secs which comes off like a weak cop out for a way to end such a massive battle?

🍻

Probably missed a few here:

1) Gladiator opening scene / the end fight. Screw it, any fight scene in the movie.

2) LOTR - Helm's Deep

3) Last Samurai final battle

Honourable mentions to 300 and the Master and Commander naval battle (underrated movie).

Pun you get an award for mentioning Master and Commander. Even tho it’s not officially in your list I was hoping it would get mentioned. So here’s your reward 🥇

Lotsa wonderful combat scenes in kung fu/wuxia moovies butt they r usually only a small number of party-sipants, not huge battles

Hmm Battle scenes, well Return of the Jedi end battle. Classic.
Gladiator - basically I 2nd what Pun said.

Sorry for your loss RtM, well done for still doing the Theme. Yeah Pun's list is difficult to beat. I love some of the battles scenes in the later series of Game of Thrones when the budget went up massively. Not that crap last season though.

Nobody has really said WHY they’ve chosen these battles other than Forza.

Maybe not so immediately obvious viewed on a small screen, but the cinematography in the battle scenes in Kurosawa's "Ran" is a thing of beauty. There are guns, but I don't think they'd qualify as modern guns.

So, Seven Samurai - 1954, some of those sequences filmed in those very real conditions, outstanding.
The scene in the torrential rain, with Horses as well, how the hell they got through that is anyone’s guess.

Gladiator, Pun had more or less said everything, and going by your criteria RtM, their action scenes are amazing and packed such emotion. Brutal.

Return of the Jedi - what needs to be said, Battle on Endor, with the Ewoks, Luke v Vader, to this day, brings out such emotion. And the Space Battle, a kids dream, just utter chaos all happening at the same time.
The Visiual effects, imagination, the fear for our beloved heroes. The music, sound effects.
Just gets you jumping from your seat!!

1. LOTR helms deep- This was the battle between good and evil. The men and women of middle earth were forced out of their homes by Saurons Orcs and Urak Hai and had to retreat to the last stronghold available to them. The situation was dire and with only a few trained combatants, it was a desperate hour in the history of men. However, they were bolstered by the assistance of elves, who offered their lives to help stand against the armies of Sauron and when they battle commenced the tension building, the rain and the terror spread by Saurons forces were brilliantly portrayed. The battle itself is a great watch, with several mini fights occuring and strategy having to be deployed from both sides. Despite the valiant efforts, the Orcs breakthrough and just as it seems all hope is lost, Gandalf appears at the first light, with the riders of Rohan and as the sun rises, the cavalry charge the Orcs and thus, the light extinguishes the darkness. This scene isn't just about the fighting, it's about the music, the cinematography, the story it's telling through action.

2. Gladiator colosseum battle-
Another battle that is predicated on good vs evil. Having already suffered the loss of everything he cherished, Maximus has earned his way back to Rome to seek his vengence. With the stunning backdrop of the majestic colosseum, he enters the arena with his fellow slaves, not just to earn his freedom but to avenge his family and as the battle plays out, it's a symphony of sound and action. All of this is played out in front of the new emperor, who is responsible for the pain and suffering that Maxiumus has experienced, so the stakes are immediately set high. There is gore, artistic moves, brutal savagery and a sense of heroism during the battle. The music does an excellent job of setting the tone and then providing a commentary of how the battle is swinging back and forth. As thousands watch and shout, the Gladiators are battling for survival within that cacophony of sound and jubiliation. The longer the battle goes on, Maximus begins to sway the crowd in his favour and his final blow to the enemy causes an eruption in the crowd and within the viewer. You are there with him, in that arena. The battle is topped off with the iconic scene of Maxiumus taking off his helmet and revealing himself to the emperor.

3. 300 Persian battle -
This scene isn't as deep as others but I just love the way the aesthetic looks and the visuals at play. The action is brutal and with the spartans all huddled together, they prove to be a formidable force. The blend of slow motion works well and Butler does a great job as the figurehead. I love the way the spartans never show any sign of fear and despite there only being 300 of them, at no point do I think the Persians will overpower them. They also do a good job of spending time on certain spartans, so you see that despite them being designed to excel in combat, they have their own unique traits. The backdrop of the ocean and the storms add to the visual feast.

Return of the jedi seems a bit too modern for the criteria specified.
