but realistically are we really competing with Arsenal and Chelsea for players?

-------

what happened with willian....?

hazard and mata were both on our radar before Chelsea came in.. and deals rumoured to be close.

Morgan S is rumoured to have the interest of all three of us...

so yes, while some players are out of our reach, eg a sanchez level signing, or a costa level signing, lots of the targets will be the same or similar.

and tbh... our track record of big deals isn't good.... we are better off going for what has given us success... young hungry players with potential, players like berbs and modric that other clubs weren't sure about taking the risk on, and experienced players towards end of career like davids and gallas.

all in all spurs are in a tricky position....

not that much cash.... but in the same market as clubs with much more cash for same players... and fans that are very demanding.

had idiot spurs fans on the radio the other day slating levy already because he has only signed a couple of low risk low money signings, ignoring the fact that both of them (3 of them if you include alli) have the potential to be very very good signings indeed

Willian? Chelsea came out of nowhere and took him, and I'm glad they did as he's garbage.

Mata and Hazard were 3 years ago. As was us supposedly rivalling Arsenal for Vertonghen.

We can't compete with these clubs financially which means our list of potential recruits should differ I'd suspect, which would mean us waiting to see if they buy player X shouldn't really have too much impact on what we do, unless them buying player X means that player Y is surplus to requirements.

the fact that willian isn't up to much isn't the point though... you said that we are not in the same market for players as arsenal and Chelsea but we are.... and if we are not we are definitely in the same market as man u and Liverpool.... both of who still pay much higher wages and higher transfer fees than us....

I was disappointed we didn't snap up Ayew on a free.. as those kind of bargains I don't feel like we can afford to miss. but obviously poch and the team looked at him and didn't fancy him, or fancied others more.

lets see where we are when the window shuts.. I am pretty confident we will have a lot trimmer, hungry, and higher quality squad than we ended the season with.

don't forget that we did come 5th, and poch was let down by pretty much every single senior player at the club apart from Lloris!

The squad has to be trimmed because it's ridiculously bloated. I'd go with about 21 'senior' players and then the rest made up of youth or younger players. As for the new signings, I have my doubts as to whether they'll be the quality of player to dislodge what is already in the starting lineup. Time will tell..

Wimmer i suspect is bought for the future.. we bad need a senior player at CB or we are relying on vertonghen to step up, which we know he won't.

Trippier i expect to start and finish the season as first choice RB.

Do people really still think we dodged a bullet with Willian? He is a good player with an even better work ethic (whether that's in his nature or demanded for Mourinho). Willian would have been a good signing for us, definitely an improvement on anyone at RM and is versatile enough to pay CAM or LM.

for the money he cost he doesn't have much end product… he is just a cog in a very effectively chelsea machine…. much cheaper players would do that exact same job.

maybe its how chelsea play (8 defenders, 1 striker, and eden hazard)

£30m for a winger with no productivity? No thanks. All he does is track back and defend, Lennon can do the same job for far less.

They pîssed the league, and his oppo Hazard had the freedom to cause havoc, so Willian has more than justified his place. When people moan about Lennon's goals or assists, it simplifies the argument and doesn't take this in to account - the impact on the team as a whole.

Good PL winning sides have often had players of his ilk - Park Ji Sung and Ray Parlour immediately spring to mind.

The first criteria for me is that a player in that position should be a threat in an attacking sense. If he works hard and defends then that's a good bonus. I've not checked out what his chance creation stats are in all honesty, but I can't imagine his goals and assist figures are up to much. I'm not too sure whether Parlour or Park started the majority of games as Willian did.

£30m to them is probably like £20m to us. So while it seems like an obscene amount of money to spend on him, their finances are different to ours.

It's about finding a balance and Willian provides that for them. Hazard and Diego Costa are capable of score enough goals to win matches and so Willian is able to contribute differently.

Someone always step up to replace goals and assist and I think without Hazard or their other goal scorers then Willian would see more of those statistics to his name. He could have brought that to Spurs because in our team we don't have the players Chelsea has and people like Willian would have to play differently, more attacking and direct.

Definitely better than Townsend and as it stands Lamela too. I do agree though that £30m is a bit steep for us anyway and purely because of that he would have got some abuse (that price tag people are expecting double digit goals and assists).

Ideally, we could do with another experienced CB. Definitely a central midfielder and a striker that is also able to play on the wing if need be because I don't see us buying another 4/5 players. The turnover is too much and we need to stablize transfer to create a core group of players that are together regularly.

Schneiderlin has come out and said he expects his future to be resolved within the next few days, a transfer is in the offing it seems...

if we are up against man u and arsenal then whats the point in us bothering? as soon as we get an offer accepted they will both match it. then its down to wages and cl football.. which we obviously come out second best on..

the two areas we could have the upper hand on are guaranteeing first team football, and poch having worked with him before...

but still.. its all about money isn't it

I think he's quite adamant he wants CL football so if that's the case then let's leave him to it and go after someone else.

Not worried at all there will be a lot of integration within the squad as in grant ward, Tom Carroll, veljkovic, Harry winks and onomah will be with the first team all summer training. Ccv and glover are due to be supplemented in too.

It will be a new look squad and I honestly believe every single piece of deadwood will be out. I think we will get Morgan S Aswell.

Are they good enough though? When I say good enough I mean top 6 quality as a minimum? I don't want kids thrown in for the sake of it so we can celebrate that we're using loads of academy players.
