Worst pundit

Usually lots Of cliched remarks Ron.

Neville came in, started telling us little insights into training and a footballers mentality, particularly during defensive analysis. Also one or two dressing-room stories. Real refreshing approach. Carragher ha done similar.

Thought a lot more pundits would do this. But no, it's as if they'll get shot for speaking anything past the generic bóllocks

I thought the day Alan Hansen left punditry would be a good day, but I was wrong. He at least made it funny. Most (if not All) bbc pundits are awful, Danny Murphy is decent (not great).

As for commentators, I've always liked Tyldesley, but maybe that's cos I grew up listening to him on itv for Champions League and a bit of premiership. Same goes for Andy gray and Martin Tyler.

Most of the ones on BBC are pretty good.

I thought Henry would be more down that street Shinji, but imo hes boring as fack.

I do agree with you, but I reckon its due to a lack of modern players with long, fulfilling careers stepping into punditry. The likes of Danny Mills and Jermaine Jenas are never going to be as informative as Neville.

No that's true about JJ and DM.

Yeah Henry, I thought he'd be a bit more open, and not too bothered about upsetting current players, which I think a lot of pundits are. Particularly the older ones.

I imagine half the players from the 80s and early 90s who are pundits don't remember the stories as they were píss heads

I remember Neville saying once how Schmeichel used to bollóck defenders for turning to the side; as they not only made themselves a smaller target side on (which is obvious), but he wanted them to just stand in their position, statuesque. Reason was, if they stuck a leg out or moved, it changed the path to goal they were blocking, and he'd have already set himself to cover the rest of the goal they weren't covering.

Feck me I bored myself writing that; and I probably could've explained it better, but I can't be bothered rewriting

Anyway, when I heard that, I thought "that's the type of shít I want to be hearing, not some "2 banks of four, stay tight, keep concentration, you must mark your man for 90 minutes" or "keep your head down, knee over the ball, shoot across the keeper, head it down" blah blah blah

Best commentator?

Chris James from Pro Evo Soccer 1 "this is the greatest game I've ever seen"

Or the guy from International Superstar Soccer:

- "he shoots!.. over the post"

Fack me im sad.

Completely agree Shinji, I think as more players retire we'll see it.

It's bizarre though, I watched a program about Liverpool and it featured the likes of Souness, Dalglish and Lawrenson. I've never particularly liked them, but in this one program they gave loads of insight into how the game was back then, for someone who despises Liverpool it was actually quite refreshing to watch.

Then you put them in an ITV/BBC studio and they're repetitive/backwards as fack.

Very strange to hear that. Particularly with Kenny. Always seemed to keep his cards close to the chest. Wouldn't mind watching that program.

In his more recent management spell, Dalglish's post-match interviews were awful. I was banned from the Liverpool board for suggesting they get a cardboard cut-out and play a recording of his previous interview.

He just kept saying, week after week, something along the lines of, and I shít you not -

"we're just gonna keep trying to pass the ball to each other and see where it takes us"

God knows why it wound me up so much as to get a board ban (the 'Pool fans were rather touchy at that point as well), but it did.

<laugh'> true words.

Last season I Googled his press conferences as much as I did van Gaal's, hoping for more drivel

"Last week I was a tactical genius" is by far the greatest post match quote I've ever head.

If only he repeated it after the Stoke game

posted on 28/6/15

Wow forgot that.

The one about how Spurs should be challenging for the title after spending 100m was class also. Set himself up big time there.

JJ is actually a pretty good pundit I thought.

Best pundit I have ever seen was Martinez when he was doing the World Cup coverage for some US Sports channel. Can tell he has such a good understanding of the game.

commentary/interviews are always completely subjective to the listener

When rafa made his 'facts' interview we were overloaded on the old 606 about how spot on he was and got praise for standing up to the resident tyrant.

asked a United fan about it and it was some deranged uncontrolled rant (by a completely calm spanish bloke)

people hear and see what they want to

JJ was OK

can't see him lasting though

nothing insightful, controversial, or interesting for the viewer. just really basic common sense comments

he was OK but you have to add something

He may have improved.

I stopped watching MOTD live a good while ago.

If I'm in, which seems more and more these days, it's Game of the day on Sky Sports then record MOTD so I can skip past all the analysis. Watch an hour and a quarter show in about 20 mins.

Prefer to watch Monday night football with Carra and Neville for the tactical discussions.

The Sunday morning special with Ben Shepherd and Chris Kamara is pretty bad as well, depending on the guests.

They're allowed about 1 min 30 seconds of clips from each game, and the rest is garbage, barring the goals from Championship, Football League etc, another to record and skip through.

I hate this new obsession with over analysing goals. When carra and Nev spent half an hour discussing Mingolets body shape for the Jagielka goal it was pîss poor television. I much prefer an in depth player analysis, or tactical battle.

posted on 29/6/15

I really hate when anyone other than Schmeicel or Freidel analyse keepers conceding

all they usually say is 'you should never get beat near post' or ramble about how they should have done better with a shot swerving away to the corner.

then they praise a 'save' as world class when it's shoulder height 4 feet to either side when all that is is mothers milk to a keeper

posted on 29/6/15

Yeah I like the individual player duels/tactical battles.

I like seeing other angles on goals to see who had fecked up, but don't overdo it man.

One thing that really frustrates is, when they're showing post-match evaluations, they start showing you more aerial views of the pitch; higher vantage point, akin to something you'd see on a computer game. This way you can see a whole half and pretty much every player in it. You can see more runs from strikers, defenders positions and other people not involved around the ball.

Use that angle through the match as well for ffs!!!

I do the same with MOTD, I don't want to sit through the punditry at 10:30-11pm, I just want to see the goals and get the reaction of the players and managers after the game.

I think MOTD would improve so much if they just had a presenter (don't care who) linking the segments, show extended highlights, the reaction, then the next game.

Tyldesley

My word, he is by far the most biased Commentator there is!!! He creams his pants every time a Man Utd player touches the ball, and if Utd are not even playing he's always adding references into the game.
He could be doing an Everton match and would say "Wayne Rooney began his career with the Toffees, ya know?"

This^^^^^ that is so true and why I can't stand listening to him.

You only have to watch the umpteen cliched post match interviews to see why pundits are so banal. They are conditioned little robots, and whoever picks them for TV obviously have a penchant for the soundbite rather than any sort of depth.

Alan Smith. I mean, really?. His wife probably nodded off while he was speaking his vows.

I don't mind Savage. He may talk shíte, but at least it's interesting shíte rather than it be boring.

They should get people in who were never shy of trouble in their playing days. Ones who arent scared to criticise their former clubs or teammates. Joey Barton would be a prime candidate.
