Problem is, a back up would be expensive, a gamble or awful.

Thing is if we buy no DM the guy will probably get injured in early Sept and is out for 2/3 of the season, then we'll have to put up with the woeful Flamini or a sluggish Arteta in there.

This. We still need another one regardless of what Coq cost us.

I think that if he can stay fit, Mr Wenger will consider using Jack Wilshere in the deep role. Especially at home against lower table clubs. Arteta is still an option, but I cannot see Mr Wenger using Flamini.

Do you guys rate Willian Carvalho.
Named man of the match in Portugal's under 21 5-0 humiliation of the Germans but still not convinced .
There is a lazy approach to his work and his recovery stamina seem suspect.
Is he worth a punt at £25million?

Agree that After a will get game time and Flamini won't assuming all are fit. Wouldn't be entirely surpised if we saw Arteta and Coquelin start together on occasion.

MOTM?? Whoever gave him that needs to give up.
He is decent, but nothing special imo. Can see him struggling in the PL, definitely a lot of question marks over his stamina, ability to cover the ground, passing ability, ball control and even his reading of the game.

Can't agree more.
May be an internal solution then .
Hope he is luckier with injuries because I rate Hayden both as a CB and DM.

Is artetas contract up this summer? Or has he signed one already? Remember there being talk he was signing one, but can't remember an announcement

What I don't understand about the OP is that he wants a DM, but us not to spend on one.
Who does he think we will get? Tom Huddlestone or Joey Barton maybe?

posted on 28/6/15

Why do you want someone as backup? Surely unless you've got absolute top quality in a position, you should look to get something as good or better? He did well for you but he's not top-notch is he?

So you dont consider Kane top notch then ?

Not sure the relevance of this to the discussion, tbh.

Yeah but apart from that.......

I have been a big fan of Coq but no way can you put all your eggs in one basket. Coq distribution has to improve before you can say he is the answer. 6 months of doing well does make him proven. If you think back we gave Flamini a two year extension because of a good 6 months. What do ppl think of Flamini now?

I believe it will be very very risky if we go into next season with present holding player lineup. One injury to Coq or a drop in form and it will be back to Flamini/Arteta.

He's good but ideally I'd like to buy someone as good as or better. Annoying as it is to admit, you've got more finance and lure to go and attract top quality whereas we don't.

We need a back-up for Coq, but not a player who will demand a guaranteed starting berth. It would be awful to dump Coq to the bench and ruin his development.

To take over Diaby?

We need to win now. As much as I like Coq to continue developing I wouldn't want it at the expense of the premier league title.

I will take Lars Bender in a heartbeat.
Can play with Coq in a double pivot or as an alternative to the Frenchman.

We need to be buying first team quality, match winning players. Not back-ups of average quality just to make up the numbers. People forget that we play 40-60 games a season, when was the last time we had a midfielder that could stay fit and on form for 75% of those?

If Coq had cost 30mil, I would definitely be suggesting we spent 20m still... unless obvious quality became available for less of course.

The bottom line is that if it takes 20mil to improve our midfield, we should pay it. It has nothing to do with Coqs price tag.

Coq is good enough to keep the DM spot. However we need to players of his level (or very close to) at DM otherwise it's one injury and we're struggling for fourth again.
