He did well last season, but is far from a key player. Plus he is getting on a bit, so replacing him with a younger player makes sense.
It seems a case of fixing something that ain't broken.
It's possible that we are proactive in replacing Montreal before he starts ageing.
But even then, there are more important aspects to address. We are one Coq injury away from playing Arteta in mf and one Theo injury away from having to play the tepid and toothless football we exhibited against Sunderland and Swansea. Not good.
I would have kept him another season then gone for Gaya as a replacement
Question is has Monreal signed a new contract with Arsenal? If not then I could see him leaving which would be a disaster for us. I rate him highly.

Agreed. He's done very well over the last year, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we could improve on him.
Would be a punch in the face to Monreal to sell him after his best season to date
It's possible that we are proactive
--------------------
Unless there is an obvious upgrade available then it would be pointless to get rid.
The players seem to have taken to him and his broken english, his interviews are hilarious
As soon as a player does well for us he leaves
There were rumours a while back of Bilbao interest but nothing came of it. Apparently this story has been promoted by the UK press rather than Basque.
If he is sold, I suspect a replacement will already have been sought.
We were linked with that Ghoulam chap from Napoli. Don't know much about him except he's huge and athletic

Pray tell, how else would you describe replacing a player who has done reasonably well but is nearing 30?
I think he was laughing at the concept of Arsenal being pro-active.

I understand and see the funny side of it, but
A this is fully possible
B if this materialises, what else would anyone call it?
