Bill, I'm not one for having a player that tackles and tracks well, but doesn't contribute much elsewhere, such as Scotty Parker.
I like the central midfielders to be able to do a bit of everything ideally, but obviously some will be better in particular areas.
Of our bunch we have, none stand out as particularly defensively sound. Bentaleb is the pick, then it's probably Dembele. The latter not having very good distribution.
For me, the player we lack in the squad would have:
Good positional discipline.
An above average range of passing.
To be aggressive and able to compete physically.
To be able to tackle reasonably well.
Not Claude Makelele, but someone who would compliment what we have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly HRH, but as far as I am concerned nothing that says specifically, "he is a defensive mid".
To me, the central midfield ought to be able to read the game well and be the first line of defence, and the first line of attack.
This labelling of our central midfield is so stifling, as if one of the two never ought to venture out of a defensive position in case the back four are compromised.
We pay a lot of money for defenders, we have 11 of them at the club at the moment, all contending for four positions. Yet we still are told we need another player who is a "defensive" midfielder.
So far, all of the comments made seem to apply to any position on the pitch, nothing specifically about what I am seeking, a clarification of what posters see as the role of a defensive midfielder.
I'm a huge fan of Song, I know he played for Arsenal and WHU, but I like the way he plays,
I'm a DM myself when I play for my Saturday team so I look at players like Martinez and learn how they play
Depends if you're classing midfield as the three positions in a 433 I suppose.
Personally I class it as just the two positions that players fulfil in virtually every system and formation you could play.
As such our current options are:
Bentaleb
Veljkovic
Dembele
Mason
Carroll
Alli
Onomah
I can only see one of the latter three getting a place in the squad.
Veljkovic and Toby possibly sharing duties with Bentaleb, or a signing .
McCarthy being a replacement for Dembele in the squad, not in addition
Our natural DM's are Toby, or Veljkovic and Benteleb to an extent
Eriksen couldn't tackle an OAP
The rest have been trained to be more advanced

It's a blanket term, and certainly means different things to different people.
To me it is the player who will naturally stay deep of the two who play in midfield, because that suits their game.
Some wouldn't class Pirlo as one, or Alonso, Carrick or even Hudd when he played for us, as none of them are traditional ball winners. But it isn't just about that for me.
You wouldn't say Ledley King or Rio were not defenders because they didn't throw themselves in to tackes or put their body on the line. It's just they do it differently.
Thudd - thought Toby was naturally a CB?
Pirlo is a playmaker, Hudd I would class as the same along with Alonso
Carrick is a bit of both, he's excellent at intercepting passes, Kroos has great distribution, Martinez just sits deep and breaks play down.
I hate Sergio Busquets with a passion, can't stand the guy
NotSo
Correct, included him in error, he's a backup but I meant as a natural defender not a midfielder, much like Ledley did for us when he slotted in there
said it lots of times... but if we sell dembele we are foolish.
Remember the dross Ledley used to play with

OK THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT YOU CREASE
Why do you hate Busquets, he's the best DM out there?
Busquets is the biggest cheat and pvssy in his position, the amount of times I've seen him dive and play act is ridiclous, you wouldn't see it from other players I've mentioned
He gives it out and does not take it
Apparently Mario Suarez is off to Fiorentina as part of the Savic move to Atleti.
Either of the Benders from Dortmund or Leverkusen would be my ideal signing.
