over 15,000 !
brilliant attendance of 22,000 for a friendly. probably higher than the first champo midweek game
a good showing by wolves but the main shortcomings that have been known of for getting on 2 years, left wing and third striker, still glaringly obvious.
and no subs used in a friendly !
whats the idea of that ?
Amazing attendance, don't know how far you have go back to find when a friendly has attracted that many to Moloneux.
Surprise no subs were used which suggests to me this will likely be the starting 11 for the first league game. Bizarrely Matt Doherty was asked to get ready to come on in the 90th minute but just as they raised the board to bring him on, the ref blew the final whistle
Ikeme didn't have much chance with either goal but didn't do badly overall.
Hause must have forced his way ahead of Ebanks-Landell as 3rd choice CB.
Stearman not up to his usual standards, hope that got his dodgy game out of his system.
Iorfa was bright going forward but struggled a couple of times defensively. One of the issues with a narrower formation is that the fullbacks will need to get forward but will also lack cover from their winger.
Golbourne like Iorfa struggled a little with the system. Plays better when he can link with a winger rather than have to overlap.
Coady quite impressive, if you want to win over the Wolves faithful nothing does it like snapping into a few challenges. Both he and McDonald need to be aware of the space behind them though as Villa exploited that a few times.
McDonald kept it simple and competent but missed the outlet of Sako, looked like he was struggling to know who he should pass to at times.
Henry pretty poor all round, not great in open play and some of his dead-balls were just wasted.
Edwards not a wide player, drifted too narrow too often (even for the way we set up) well taken goal and ran his socks off but needs to play centrally.
Afobe too deep too often but had little choice with the lack of service, can't remember him having a shot on target until he scored but that's the beauty of a player like him - he can turn a loss into a draw or a draw into a win at the drop of a hat.
Dicko should have done better with a couple of his chances but overall played well.
Agree with all of that tatter, although I would be more positive about Iorfa than you were.
Impressed by Hause in his defending and distribution and I am content we don't need to bring in a new centre back now as cover and competition for Batth and Stearman.
We did play well second half and were the better team in that period. But you do wonder where the spark is going to come from that Sako gave us. Unless we get someone who can run with the ball and turn the defence I could see us getting a few draws in games we would have won with Sako there.
Highlight of the game for me was when Coady won a 50:50 ball, the ball ran free and he then won another crunching tackle where he was 40:60 to win, and then he got up and put a perfect through ball to Dicko. More of that kind of stuff and he will be a real asset.
I was also impressed with Coady and I think his ability to win the ball back high up the pitch will create great counter-attacking opportunities for Afobe and Dicko.
Hause and Iorfa also played well, but I thought Stearman and Golbourne were not at their best. With the narrow midfield we need the full-backs to provide width and in my opinion Golbourne hasn't done enough offensively since his injury.
Overall it was a good performance and we're not too far away from having a decent team, but everyone knows which two positions we still need to strengthen...
Baffled by the decision to use no subs, it seems a little daft to me.
Does it mean Kenny has little faith in our second string? What message does it send to those players as well that they can't get a game in pre season?
No surprise Hause appears to have jumped ahead of EEL, we all pretty much expected that.
Are we going to get the best out of Afobe having him drop deeper?
Needs must right now I suppose, but surely he is best served in and around the box, though maybe Wallace is the answer to that problem, a real shame he is injured.
I'm glad he didn't use too many subs - it gave the game a much more competitive feel - but 2-3 in the second half wouldn't have done any harm.
I'm struggling to see how we fit McDonald, Coady & Wallace into midfield and still play two up front. I don't see how it would work in a 4-4-2 unless Wallace is used wide right which doesn't solve the wide left problem so if we are going to squeeze them all in it is going to take a bit of tinkering. Oh well still plenty of time 'til the season starts.
Yeah dunno tats.
Assuming for a minute Wallace is as good as he is tipped to be, this for me would be our strongest four midfielders.
..........price
...kmac....coady
.........Wallace
A narrow diamond, or a very narrow diamond to some
But I guess we can still expect a left sider to come in yet, but even then it leaves plenty of questions as to who fits where.
From everything I have heard of Wallace I am expecting good things, I hope conservative Kenny doesn't waste him.
Zele gone to Burton on loan until January. Getting close to last chance saloon for him now and he needs to be outstanding at that level if he is to make the grade with us.
And Andy Keogh has signed for Ratchiburi in Thailand!
Anyone remember David moli from the u21s?
Now plying his trade for the Maldives champions.
I think we're more likely to see Jed operating off one of the wings this season. Most likely the right, where I think he played a lot for Pompey. This would also help explain why Jackett seemed a bit tentative about Henry's future at the club before Wallace's injury worsened?
Does anyone know what has happened to Conor Hunte? At the end of last season he seemed to be next on the blocks, along with Graham, in terms of stepping up from u21s. But didn't go to France and wasn't in either squad last night. Has he appeared at all in preseason?
Be interesting to see what Kenny does with Wallace that's for sure, apparently a gifted individual with great vision who could do well centrally.
I guess ideally coady would be the deep player with Wallace, kmac and whoever we can sign for the left would work best at the moment?
Wallace has done well in League Two and this is a big step up for him. I hope he does well but I think it's unfair to put great expectations on him before he has even played one game. After all Saville came to us having done very well at a level higher than Wallace. Even if he is a good player I don't expect Wallace to be a regular starter for a while even after he is fit
Speaking of Saville, where is he?
Hasn't featured in recent weeks at all has he?
And yeah, it is gonna take some time for Wallace now, the step up was one thing, and now injury to go with it leaving him weeks behind the others.
Hoping Coady can be real box to box all action rather than sitting midfielder. Early signs are good.
Can't see Kenny playing without one though lizard.
