I thought the same

From what I've heard it's like how Cantona or Rooney's attitudes were considered a problem but if channelled in the right way can be vital to the way he played.

Not that I'm saying Memphis has the anger Cantona did but more that the confidence/arrogance can be a double edged sword and must be channelled correctly or you could potentially see a player lose it a bit.

Right now he seems stoked at being at United and seems to want to improve and learn which is great. There will no doubt be some lows to come but I'm confident we have a great players on our hands who with the right guidance could be a brilliant player for us.

He seems to have a good attitude to developing as a player: self-confident but driven to learn and improve.

The one thing in the OP I'd take issue with is the notion that we might expect him to stay at United for longer than some stars. I read in one article about him that he says he'd like to play in Spain one day.

I like a bit of confidence/arrogance in a player. The one thing I hope though is that his confidence isn't easily lost.

Look at Nani - he was a fantastic player at his best, but is a confidence player. He needed to be playing every week with the backing of the manager, fans etc. to have confidence to play well.

Hopefully Depay won't suffer in a similar way, especially if he doesn't start every week.

I guess you have to expect that by default for young European players that we sign nowadays. Then if they do stay longer than we expect, it's a bonus!

I think the attitude thing was Koeman stirring because he doesnt particularly like LVG. I trust louis on this one becasue he worked with him as national team coach and is pretty heavy on his 'philosophy' (i think when he says philosophy he is also alluding to attitude off the pitch and not just tactical nous). So i think he'll be fine. he looks confident in his own ability, much like Ronnie was and look at him now. Many would actually argue that Ronnie is actually the nicer guy compared to the much loved Messi. He just shows his frustration on the pitch however Messi is quite cold off it. How this becasue Ronnie v Messi i dont know...it's not what im doing lol. Anyway, put simply, i like what i see with Memphis, he looks fast, strong, can beat a man, can read the game, can pass, can shoot, tap in and many more things. He's not a number 9 but looked comfortable there so he's versatile too. I'm very excited. I wouldnt mind if became a flat track bully like Ronnie was...quiet v the big teams (use young in those games) and a guaranteed win vs the smaller ones. We miss that kinda thing.

His attitude on the field the last 2 pre-season games seemed very solid, showing maturity. That's all we need to care about. Koeman's the last person I'd listen to.

Sounds very much like Zaha. Remember him?

FWIW, Memphis attitude is fine.

Did RVP not play under this "philosophy"?

Yeah he did, not well enough which is why he was sold, nothing to do with attitude problems.
