I heard United paid:
£20m for Carrick!
£20m for Hargreaves!
£15m for Jones!
£10m for Smalling!
Still £7 million less than Carroll, and Veron has been world class at every other club he played for, just an unlucky signing much like Forlan. Also we sold him to Chelsea for £20 million a bit later on so just an £8 million gamble which didn't pay off. When Carroll turns out to be naff who do you think will buy him for over 20? NOBODY!

Id rather overspend on quality than overspend on mediocrity. Signing players like Voronin, Aurelio, Skertl, Carrol, Johnson, etc doesn't win you trophies evidently....
carrick = good buy
hargreaves = bad luck for englands best midfielder
smalling = certainty for england
jones = ditto
He is behind Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Wilshire and Parker in the England squad!
Carrick's only personal achievment is PFA First Division Team of the Year : 2003-04, and that was won while he was at Tottenham!
