I'm really glad to see an article like this.

I was really fed up of people complaining about Dier playing in midfield because " it would ruin his development". Ledley King played in the DM position for years and turned into a great Defender.

I get really annoyed at people in the media. They go on and on about lack of opportunities for English players in the premier league then spend all summer sl a gging
us off for not signing enough Jonny foreigners to challenge for the top four. You know what? F. Uuuuuuuu c the top four. You either need a sugar daddy like the ch a vvs or Man City, a large stadium, twenty years of champs league money and an astronomical wage bill like arsenal or be able to spend nearly three hundred million to get back in like United.

We can't do any of that at the minute. So we can get our heads down, invest in our training facilities, produce and blood exciting youngsters, mostly English and save money to build our new stadium. All off our own backs with out the cash cow of the champions league. And they sl aggggg us off for that? If we get another Kane this season and they end up on that England plane to the euros next summer, they should all get in their knees and kiss our arris whilst we blow last nights vindaloo out of our beer sodden guts. Caaaaannntttsssss.

I'm happy for young players to take up a number of roles, like you say in Ledley King he did this at a very young age and adapted easily, if you can push players to learn other positions it's great for the team and panic buying players.

Dier will be excellent in this position, it's the norm now, Phil Jones has done this for United, Zouma for Chelsea

The media really are the pits. Spurs are showing the way for British football, young English talents. Overpriced johny foreigners are not the way forward in my book now.

Dier is highly thought of at the club, and goes under a radar a lot, he is a huge talent, and will be a big player for Spur in the coming years. When we tak about ll the good young players at Spurs, Dier is right up there with them

I'm one of those, I'll happily be proven wrong and if he turns out to be great there then I'll be the first to hold my hand up. Here's hoping that he is a brilliant DM.

Still think (for now) that he's covering because we are short, and no player wants to be that 'utility player', they want to be first choice in their own position.

But let's see... looking forward to this season.

I think because he's so young and energetic he will mold himself into the role, really excited to see how we get on Saturday

Thudd i'm sure someone on here said that in an interview Poch stated that Soldado had an injury, maybe explains the lack of pre-season.

Really hope he plays his part this season, I'm sure he's got it in him to get goals, just needs the right team with the right service, and he needs to work incredibly hard to run into spaces

Have to admit I do not understand the term "holding player " but saw most of the game on Tursday evening and was a bit disappointed with Dier.

In possession he had a tendency to turn back to his own goal and play the safe pass backwards or sideways.

We need someone with the ability to carry or move the ball forward quickly, not keep slowing down play with negative tactics.

To dare is to do!

The holding player wouldn't usually do this, (from experience) your duty as that player is to rotate into a particular area to feed other players, so you're restricted to an area.

Against Real and Milan it was Diers duty to feed Benteleb, Mason, Alli to make the forward runs, yes a holding player can become an attacking option but usually he protects and organises

Like you say TO DARE IS TO DOOOOOOOO William my old bean

Restricted to what area?

We cannot afford to waste a player whose only job is to lay the ball off to someone else to do something positive with it.

Bill is spot on, Dier was terrible vs Madrid in midfield and will be against any half-decent team, he's not good enough on the ball to play there, very few defenders are

I play CDM so I understand where you're allowed to move into, he's restricted in his position, so they'll be areas of the pitch which he will operate.

So much for bringing in some more experience into an inexperienced midfield. Just bring in an inexperienced defender to fix things....
