Nico Rosberg beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton in first practice at the Belgian GP despite a difficult session.

Rosberg suffered an engine problem early on and did not record a time until halfway through the session but ended up 0.242 seconds quicker than Hamilton in second.

Daniel Ricciardo underlined the step forward Red Bull have made with their car in recent races by taking third.

The session was interrupted by a crash for Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado.

Merc should skoosh it only reliability will cost them and after last year Rosberg will be bricking it and Lewis will also know this.

Williams and Ferrari will be close the power unit for Williams will bring them right back on par with the prancin horses.

Expect Kimi to not make the race he is still baw deep in blondes and hot tubs back in finland after signing his new deal.

Caught between to minds i have a lot of mates over there just now so i hope the weather holds up... but spa is so much more interesing in the wet....

fook it hope the heavens open and the fastest car on the track is an arc !

MUDD i know you prob have already but if you havent actually check out one of the many highlight reels on youtube of Crashtor .... we all know the guy is a muppet when it comes to decision making but there is about a 10 mins video i saw recently. Its absolutley shambolic ...... a shame as well as i genuinely know a few folk that could do a better job

also on another note Blancpain Spa 24 hrs race saw a win for the BMW Z4 on its last showing before being replaced by the new M6 .... I love that Z4, sounds awesome and is my car of choice when running GT3 events online

You see someone like Crashtor in F1 and decent drivers do not have a drive and it is criminal.

Imagine what a competent driver could do with that Lotus

Yeah but at the same time pay drivers are required in the sport but even then there are better talents out there than him .... its not that he is painfully slow or that its his decision making and spacial awareness that are as bad as i have ever seen in F1. Its bloody cringe to think that he has a win to his name.

Alonso and Button have already used up their permitted supply of five engines, and Honda has produced an upgraded unit for the race at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Japanese company has made two of the new engines available to each driver this weekend.

"Starting where we are might not be such a bad thing," said Button.

"At Turn One you never really know what's going to happen. We could pick up four or five places."

Honda says is yet to decide whether both engines, which have improved combustion performance, will be used over one race weekend.

But BBC Sport understands that is the plan, and Honda did admit that a number of ancillary parts would also be changed, which come with their own penalties.

Using two engines in one weekend would effectively give Alonso and Button a 'free' engine without a penalty.

That is because the punishment for the first engine change and the ancillary parts would already put them at the back of the grid.

The German then hit trouble when he suffered a spectacular right-rear tyre failure while close to 200mph.
"Definitely not fun," Rosberg said. "It was at maximum speed, so not good."
Rosberg was also quicker in the first session, heading Hamilton by 0.302secs as the world champion appeared to struggle to get a feel for the track.
The incident caused him to spin and the session was stopped to clear the track.
Pirelli said it was investigating the cause of the failure, which happened in the section heading towards the Blanchimont corner, one of the most demanding curves on the track, which is among the toughest on the calendar.

Right-rear tyre you say? Has anyone been able to confirm Hamilton's whereabouts in the minutes before Rosberg's run? Can we conclusively say no foul play or revenge going on here for last year?

Nico looking good, but coming across a little smug with some of the quotes around Hamilton needing to use his data and having the edge. Race gets decided on Sunday!

He's just set himself up for a massive come down. Hamilton is most likely working on a racing set up preparing to overtake if he needs to.

2 tenths at Spa is nothing.

Don't know about you, but I feel less safe in the knowledge that he hasn't crashed today yet. It could come anytime, anywhere.... going to pull down the blinds and hide until he is safely on the back of a Belgian pick-up truck,,,
