Not sure why the media think for one second a player at Real Madrid will leave Madrid for Tottenham

16m euros supposedly, that's £11.7m. Bargain really, think both clubs have missed a trick here.

He'd have been an excellent signing for either Spurs or Liverpool - even Real Madrid players get bored sitting on a bench for 2 straight seasons.

Does blow my mind a bit that Spurs continue to chase players like Bolasie and Berahino at a combined £40-50m when for that price they could probably pick up players like Yarmolenko, Illarramendi, Cheryshev, Llajic AND Austin, all of which are at least as good.

I get that they're unproven in the Prem (Austin aside) but still, 2 inferior players for the price of 5 superior ones seems a little counter-intuitive.

Are you for facking real babe!!!?

You've only got to look at the UEFA Rankings and the wealth and infrastructure of both clubs to know that Spurs are a much bigger club than Real Sociedad
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And that is clearly all you have looked at. Babe.

I'll go with the grown up assessment from Thudd, thanks.

"Because he agreed with you"

Partly yes, surely people tend towards opinions closer matching their own? But mostly because he didn't call me babe and fill his answer with smilies.

Anyway, this club is bigger than that club arguments are always doomed - I just think it's wide of the mark to say Spurs are 'far (or much) bigger' than Real Sociedad. Particularly in the context of attracting Spanish (or more specifically Basque) footballers.

"I think Malmo are bigger than Arsenal."

Fair enough. I think you're wrong, but whatever.

No real loss. A neat and tidy player but not really what we need at the moment. Still a guy who would need a more physically imposing / defensively minded player alongside him.

In some games, yes. Certainly not all the time then. He is someone that can dictate play and his positioning means that he doesn't need to make tackles. I think he would have fitted Spurs perfectly, they have missed someone since Modric left. And whilst he isn't in Modric's class, he would have been a step up on what Spurs have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Again, he's solid in possession, rarely loses it, etc, but you are considerably overestimating his creativity, and his ability to get involved further up the pitch, if you feel he's a solution to the absence of Modric.

I clearly said dictating play. Which is what he does.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You said he would have provided what Spurs have missed since Modric left, which he wouldn't have done.

He isn't agile or strong enough to be the more defensive of two CMs, nor creative/attack-minded enough to provide us what we would have needed from him in the more offensive role.

As Balague reported, we were never seriously interested, and I'm not really surprised at that.

They are two completely different players.

Modric was far more active out of possession than Illarramendi has ever been. He was always on the move, always seeking little pockets of space in which to receive the ball and link with others. He tied our play together from inside our own half forward into the final third.

Illarramendi, in contrast, is a more sedentary player, doing most of his work in much deeper areas than Modric and rarely moving forward to join in higher up the pitch. He performed disastrously when given a Modric-like brief for Madrid a couple of times last season.

He really would not have been a solution to some of the problems we've seen since Modric's departure.
