We should all try and go out of Europe as early as possible then UEFA will think wow the PL must be good if the teams are all going out because of how tough the PL is at the weekend so hopefully they will give us a 5th place. Maybe for the Carling cup winner because that competition further shows the strength of the prem due to teams deliberately going out. The earlier we go out the more CL placed we should get.
I think you'll find Everton took it very seriously last year. We were in fact the last English club remaining in any European cup last season.
Although the topic is slightly irrelevant this season as we are not in the competition. Some of the problem lies with Hull last season and West Ham this season getting knocked out before the group stage even beings. We therefore start the competition with one team less.
Our downfall last year was squad depth/injury crisis hence the poor league form.
The "top 4" should take the biggest portion of blame if the fourth spot goes as champions league coefficient points are worth more than Europa league ones.
The fact is they simply haven't been good enough. They have all the money in the world but for the last 2/3 seasons have been left utterly embarrassed.
What incentive is there for the likes of Spurs,Everton to progress as far as they canin the europa league if it means the Premier leagues maintains it's 4th champions league place.
I personally would sooner the premiership lose it's 4th champions league place and have 2 or 3 out of the big 5/6 fail to reap the financial rewards of the champions league

A very big incentive. If you win it, you reap the financial rewards you talk about by qualifying for the CL.

I take it Liverpoolwill play a full first choice 11 for every game as it will be your bwst chance for champions league football then.
Brendan picked his strongest side for the first game then?
There's only one reds appears to have taken defeat o the chin there Phil

People seem to think the PL is the only league that rotates players for the EL. It's what clubs from the top leagues. No point knackering your squad in September, is there?
Fact is, Liverpool ought to have more than enough squad depth to deal with group containing second level French, Russian and Swiss sides, even if they were all to play their strongest line-ups.
Once you get to the 2nd k.o. round is when you have to get more serious.
If qualifying from your group relies on fielding a strong team on the last match day then you should, of course.
What nonsense that either team didn't take it seriously! They played weaker players in the group stage granted but when you play the league champions of Outer Mongolia it ain't difficult!
In the knockout stages both teams put strong squads out!
The likes of Utd 2 seasons ago, Liverpool last season and other such failures are just as big if not bigger reasons for the position the PL finds itself.
Let's be honest though once the 4th spot is gone one of our regular top 4 teams will play the strongest team throughout and get in through the Europa anyway so yay
Everton were the last English team in European action last season
Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and City all with bigger budgets crashed out before us. In fact Liverpool crashed out in the CL and EL!
So maybe if the big money sides took the CL seriously then all would be good
So,as a club do you think your priority should be to finish as high in the prem as you can OR trying to win the Europa league ??
In every comp to win it, that's why Everton were the English team that progressed the furthest.
Should United, Liverpool have taken the EL seriously?
In fact only Chelsea gain any credit after winning it. A few years back. The rest just flop in CL and EL, more concerned about getting back in the CL than trying to win the EL
How about the CL teams doing better, they've been pathetic for the last few years, this is where the blame lies IMO
I hope United take the EL seriously
