Bolton's plight

Whilst obviously not on the bloated salaries of premier league players, i would bet most of the team are on between 5 and 10 grand a week, its hardly going to bankrupt them missing 1 paycheck.

When we played them in 2002 and beat them at their ground I thought we were safe and they would be relegated. Shows the myth of the 6 pointer. Bolton invested heavily in quality players after that game and were saved, we didn't and were relegated. That probably did us a favour as we gradually weaned ourself off unsustainable debt whereas Bolton became addicted to it.

They had some good times based on money they didn't have When they were relegated their CEO was quoted as saying that Bolton's debts didn't concern him and they could live with them. Like QPR I find it hard to feel any sympathy for their plight.

I don't feel sorry for Bolton, it's their own fault.

I especially don't feel sorry for Neil Lennon, who is a thoroughly dis likable person.

A lesson for ALL clubs who spend above and beyond their means trying to stay or get into the premier league and failing to do so..

We don't need sympathy. Please get those buckets rattling around your ground.

Thank you for your support.

Nah, this will make them appreciate what they have.

They wouldn't be in this mess had they stuck with Gary Megson.

Didn't Gartside once want to close the Premier league promotion door?

As always in these situations, it's not the owners or management who deserve sympathy, but the loyal fans.
Hard to believe that a club with Bolton's history could be allowed to fall on it's face. However, let's hope you don't jump out of the frying pan into the fire, as has happened to others.

Benny's right of course, but for once I have to disagree with Harps in NZ.

When folks get a salary they spend it - mainly on monthly commitments. So any interruption immediately causes severe problems.

Otherwise posts from Harper and from 2 Wellies - both living outside UK - are most welcome. I imagine one enjoying benign weather and the other living through Vancouver rain.

I've just thought - there must be many Forest fans counting themselves very lucky as the Red Dogs will be fighting to avoid only 2 out of 3 relegation spots.

It is always said that it is the fault of the club and the fans that suffer but I never saw any Bolton fans complaining when Bolton were employing the likes of Djorkaeff, Okacha and Anelka, players they obviously couldn't actually afford.

I feel sorry for the fans but not the club itself. Something needs to be done about spending above a clubs income etc and until it's clamped down on properly this will continue to happen.

Plus the fact Gartside wanted to ringfence the PL (maybe he knew this would happen) makes me hope they get the book thrown at them

Thing is it could happen to any club who's owner just decides to cut all funding and can't get a sale and or investment.

I have been saying this for years now. The sugar daddy model for club ownership tends to lead to bankruptcy. Look what happened to us with Lionel and Captain Bob. Hopefully we don't become too reliant on MM as Bolton did with Eddie Davies.

Bolton could afford the anelkas (made £7m profit on him) jj, youri, campo. It was mr megson and mr coyle who wasted the money on a long list of players and got nothing back. Elmander, ngog, sordell, eagles, mears, mills. I could go on.

Genuinely sorry for Bolton's plight, we've been there enough times ourselves to know the feeling. Yes, self inflicted, but mostly now paying for sins of the past. It is the fans you have to feel sorry for, yes some were quite happy buying the big names, but who wouldn't be? (Ravenelli, Carbone?) I doubt there was a realisation of the true implications down the road. We seem to have somewhat fratenal relations on here with the Bolton fans mainly due to RiD's visits so do wish them the best

Hello all. It's been a while since I was on but given the current circumstances at the club I've decided to take the plunge and return to the internet.

Anyway, signing Anelka, JJ and Djorkaeff was never where the damage was done. It came from ED himself appointing Phil "I have a fax in my pocket" Gartside as chairman and then structuring his "investment" in the club into a loan at high interest in all but name. Add in that he also took money out on a regular basis (I still remember the "success fee" he charged the club when Anelka was sold) and that we no longer know who owns Moonshift etc and this has been coming since Sam Allardyce left. Many of us warned as early as 2008 that the club was on shaky financial footing. The introduction of FFP made the ground into quicksand beneath our feet and throw in the chain of disastrous managerial appointments from "we got the better Sam" onward and it's not hard to see why we're staring down the barrel of the gun again just as we were in 1985/6. Personally I believe Administration before January is looking increasingly certain. How we get out of it is anyone's guess.

I've just remembered that my mate Big John from university was a Bolton fan. He was also an Apostle, played as our target man. He was over 6 foot six tall, maybe still is for all I know. I haven't seen him for over twenty five years. I recall he leaped into the air during the Hand of God game vs Argentina celebrating what he thought was Lineker's equaliser but which went wide of the post. The light fitting shattered and a goal kick was awarded.

So I feel sorry for him aswell now.

They have shorter telomeres apparently Ang. I always suspected as much. Of course they are extrapolating from studies on "skeletally larger" sparrows, but since 666 is both "big-boned" and, on one of his better days, of similar intelligence to the birds in question there may well be a similar story. I wonder if we will miss him when he shuffles off his perch?

JFC! I've found him! He scored a goal at the Doctor's World Cup in Rio in 2005 and is now in Australia!

Being tall's obviously got it's disadvantages, but I'll settle for being cleverer and more popular

Sorry for hijacking your thread, BK.
