I perhaps could have worded that better
I've often said plenty of teams in Scotland should merge, there are surely huge advantages of it?
One team from Dundee
One team from Fife
One team from the Highlands
One team from Ayrshire
I get the part about rivalries etc but lets be honest, they are hardly bedlam, you tune into the Dundee Derby and kants are sitting with a Chicken Tikka Balti pie and a Bovril

For the majority of the lower league teams, absolutely!
ICT merged with another club years ago to become who they are and look at them now
However I can't see the 2 Dundee teams merging.
Makes sense I suppose as their stadiums are pretty much right on top of each other
Bulldoze both sheidtholes build one stadium, have the team wear orange and navy, keep their same one sing between them, upgrade the Chicken tikka balti pie to a prawn sandwich and there you have it, a team possible of breaking into the top 6

Mergers are the only way that smaller clubs will be able to compete for the big prize domestically - the SPFL Premiership....Hearts/Hibs, Dundee / Dundee United & Partick Thistle / Rangers.....Celtic would not get it so easy

To be honest I'd rather just bulldoze dundee
I am dead against the idea!
Anything that might keep those Dun Utd scvm fvcks in the top league, saved from the humiliation of relegation, does not get my vote
Sorry Ivan

I don't think Hearts and Hibernian should merge as they are potentially big clubs with their fan base.
Idk if I could support Leeds if we merged with Bradford and became Leedford Unicity
Mergers are the only way that smaller clubs will be able to compete for the big prize domestically

That's a myth I'm afraid.
If United and Dundee merged we'd at best get attendances equal to that of Aberdeen. The Dons are hardly regular title winners are they?
I can't see any situation where I would go along on the first day of a Dundee City team and support that club.
And as for the ICT example - Juke will tell you that there are still plenty of folk up there who supported the previous teams and won't go along to support ICT.

Just said that for the PartickThistle / Rangers dig mate ! Would be like saying Celtic / rangers merger would compete highly in the Champions League...very good in theory but no chance in practice
ICT done well out of it on the pitch
But the fanbase isn't just a merry bunch who followed separate teams and are all now mates.
Loads of people in the Inverness area were left without a club to support. But no one cares...
I cant see why Dundee would want to merge with relegation fighting losers Dundee united tbh
They should merge.
Dundee City is a bad name though, they could just keep the common parts of their names and drop the other bits.
So Dundee Utd would drop the Utd
And Dundee FC would drop the FC
They would just be known as "Dundee"
Then they could merge the colours. Dark blue mixed with orange equals slightly lighter blue.
So they would be called Dundee and they would dress in blue.
The two stadiums are right next to each other so they would have to choose one, as they new "Dundee" would be wearing blue then it makes sense to move into the stadium with the blue seats already, so that would be Dens Park.
That would work
mick
also, dens park holds a more realistic number of fans for Dundee, so it would give the illusion of a bigger crowd
I think its really arrogant of people to just dismiss clubs and tell them to merge, regardless of how small they are, the fans of those clubs still enjoy having their own identity
re structuring of the leagues is what is required with smaller clubs competing in regional leagues as its more cost effective
I still sometime wonder what it would have been like had we a massive Glasgow / Edinburgh rivalry
2 massive teams from each city who fooking hate each other
It might be arrogant, but would it be better for Scottish football in a global context?
Absolutely.
We are (I believe) the country with the highest football attendance per head of population in the world (at least we were). If that support was more concentrated then we could have exceptional teams, something to make the TV rights worth buying overseas.
Let's be honest, it you were starting from scratch you would only have a 12 to 16 team league with no lower league. In fact 8 or 10 teams even makes more sense.
It might suck for certain fans but it would be far better for Scottish football in the long run.
Dundee
Dundee Utd
St Johnstone
Merge all 3
They all talk the same northern kind of way
And they get a half decent place to play
Mick,
Don't talk pash.
This isn't American sports with franchises and what not. Football in this country is more than just a game - a club is often at the heart of its community and is a focal point.
If the 'merger' had happened in 99 then I would wager at least 75% of Dees would be lost to the game and a good chunk of United supporters wouldn't have been happy either and might have disappeared. If a proper merger happened, I know I'd be lost to the game.
I have no great interest in where our club game stands in a global context. Domestic football is all I particularly care about.
