There are too many awards for people who do a job most people can only dream about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or who don't do much of a job most people can only dream about in some cases. I remember when Rusedski won for losing in a final. . And who can forget Giggs?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Giggs winning took the biscuit, but it confirmed to me that it's not an award to take seriously. Just enjoy celebrating English sportspeople and don't get hung up on the result with SPOTY. It makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Great comment even if I don't agree with you
As far as most people are concerned the Ashes is crucket and their world rankings is excellent as well
I can certainly see the argument for Root. I probably woud've had him in ahead of Sinfield if I had choice as his achievements are on an international stage as opposed to club. Nevertheless I see the merit for all of these nominees.
What I really can't fathom is those who think Rooney or Vardy should be on it. That is truly baffling to me.

I've found it's lost its enjoyable factor now. I don't know if that's because I'm older than I used to be, or it's just become more dull.
From the Oxford English Dictionary:
Personality: "A celebrity or famous person"
That is what personality means and has always meant in this context. Every year there are the same jokers on internet forums who talk about how none of the candidates have personality when that is not what the award is about

Id put Root in for Rutherfod after all he didn't want to be there anyway
Why don't they just call it Sportsperson?

Afternoon mate
Dictionary def is all well and good but the public perception of what it means is all that really counts
Or 'Overpaid Celebrity' works equally well.

I'm not sure that's completely correct Squid. I believe his argument was that he'd struggle to share the same stage with someone with as extreme views as Fury has. Fury is a highly controversial character and I certainly couldn't hold that stance against Rutherford.
As an athletics fan, I think his achievement to become only the 6th ever Brit to win European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic titles is pretty special and absolutely deserving of the award. He also does a lot to promote the sport and I would argue has the 'personality' to be a valid winner.
