"is awful" or "are awful"? This often bugs me, I favour 'are' seeing Chelsea FC as a collective noun (particularly with FC bit), and therefore a plural.

And no, even with all their woes, I also suspect we'd still fail to beat them.

I suspect that a Chelsea resurgence would occur the day of the game and they would batter us 4 nil and go on to win their next 20 games.

The sad thing about this Chelsea form is that Wenger still wouldn't beat Mourinho in league game

I remember after their game with Everton where they were blown away, in his post game interview he said they were favorites for their next game, Which was us, kind of sad when you consider I have never heard him say such thing about another team. The guy clearly has Wenger's ticket. Which is ironic considering he has such hate for Wenger.

Let's be fair on the game this season it was won for them by the referee. If they avoid relegation by 3 points they will be very thankful to Mike Dean.

"Is" or "are" are both correct as the convey the message accurately though somewhat differently.

I'm not sure that's right, but since no-one has said either one is 'correct' - you're really just arguing with yourself.
