The trend is of some nasty entity sitting on them.
There appears to be no precise cultural descriptions of the entity, other than stylised descriptions in folklore.

And no cursory suggestion of common experiences where things akin to medical examination/procedures happened (hence my USA 'cultural bias' comment) .

Had a flock of blackbirds a week or two ago.

I don't think it's cursory. Thousands of similar cases in the Americas but the same cannot be seen anywhere else. There'd be thousands of cases of many people having similar experiences in other lands as well. I don't think it's adds up.
