Actually more stars in the known universe than sand on all the beaches of the earth, so that multiplies the number of planets even more
But like you say the distances are too vast..
The probability of 2 civilizations being alive at the same time and in relative proximity are almost like winning the euro millions!

In fact, I think the first option is more terrifying.

Because it means the human race is the best that nature can do in all the extraordinary vastness of the universe.

Hmm...at two new winners every week, we'd better get used to the idea of being probed.

There are estimates of something like 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars are in the universe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
arsene wenger claims to know better. he reckons there are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 +1
"I suffer from sleep paralysis. Which basically means you wake up completely unable to move(it happened to me twice this morning). Often but not always this is coupled with hallucinations.. Today for example was crows flying around my bedroom."
1. Twice in a night (Jeez) !!??
2. When it has happened to me, I have never had the hallucination effect (when face up) .
It is bloody horrible though when it happens.
It would be really cool if you woke up to a swarm of flying b(.)(.)bies
There are 13,000,000 000 years of existence in the life of the universe before the human race, we CANNOT be alone.
Nearly all the abduction cases are recorded in the Americas or at least a significant majority. I've always wondered why. Also if sleep paralysis is the cause theoretically the reported cases should be more evenly spread, no?

Definitely worth watching

We share 70% of our carbon-based DNA with slugs. 50% with the humble banana.
You will have to define "alone".

There may be a 'cultural bias' aspect to this (and can probably be corroborated with historical data) .
If you are exposed to certain cultural input (USA media mentioning alien abductions at night etc) , then sub-consciously that may affect what you perceive you are seeing during the sleep paralysis episode.
100 years from now, what will be the thing that sleep paralysis sufferers report seeing most often.

Then what do sleep paralysis sufferers in places outside the Americas report seeing most often. If the experience is driven by cultural bias then there should be similar trends of some sort everywhere, no?

The trend is of some nasty entity sitting on them.
There appears to be no precise cultural descriptions of the entity, other than stylised descriptions in folklore.
And no cursory suggestion of common experiences where things akin to medical examination/procedures happened (hence my USA 'cultural bias' comment) .

Had a flock of blackbirds a week or two ago.
I don't think it's cursory. Thousands of similar cases in the Americas but the same cannot be seen anywhere else. There'd be thousands of cases of many people having similar experiences in other lands as well. I don't think it's adds up.
