No this is the best year in 45 i hve had my most enjoyable time was going home and away in the early 80's our promotion year. But this is the best for the club and foxy me old mucker. The poor start to the year was just to enable us to appreciate the rest of of much more!!

After much soul-searching and reflection, I'm probably going to have to start supporting a different club. Our current position is causing many unwanted side-effects that are detrimental to my health:

- Confusion caused by looking at the Premier League table and not being able to find us.
- Constant nosebleeds.
- Hairs on the back of my neck standing up at around 5pm every Saturday.
- It seems to be having an odd effect on my face. The corners of my mouth keep on sticking up around my eyes.
- Repetitive strain injury in my vocal chords from giving the same answer to people asking me "What about Leicester City then?".
- My doctor has told me that I am also starting to suffer from a particularly nasty-sounding condition called "euphoria". I asked him if it was permanent and he replied that, as a Forest fan, he could assure me it wasn't. But even so, I'm not sure how to deal with this.

As such, I expect I shall become an Aston Villa fan in the new year. At least then I can get back to the normal and comforting feeling of misery and faded dreams, combined with the twinge of hope coming from somewhere deep within that someday things might actually be better.

At the end of last season I think I wrote that our great escape was the most remarkable thing that I’d seen in football. Certainly the most remarkable thing I’d ever seen from us. I chose my words carefully as “most remarkable” rather than “biggest achievement” as winning something (League Cups) is arguably bigger in terms of achievement.

I didn’t think I’d ever see anything to surpass last season in terms of being remarkable or incredible for a very long time, but if we continue with our current form then we are in danger of creating another benchmark altogether. If we did end up winning something then there would be some debate as to whether it is, not just the most remarkable, but the greatest achievement ever – not just by us, but in football history.

The only thing I can think of that compares is the Forest success story of promotion, followed by League title, followed by European cup wins in the late 70’s/early 80’s. I’m not sure that sort of run could ever be surpassed in terms of silverware gathered but, if we did win something, arguments could be made for our achievement being even greater. The Forest story was written in an era when a genius manager could walk into a football club and transform expectations. With the money that is now floating around in the Premier League it has long been accepted wisdom that nobody could ever gatecrash the party without investment in the 100’s of millions.

But all that talk is for another day as we haven’t won anything yet. However, in answer to the original question from the OP – Best Ever Year? Most remarkable, most incredible, most exciting and most pleasing – definitely! Best? I don’t know – watching my team lift a trophy at Hillsborough and Wembley is hard to beat.

In all seriousness though, I would certainly say that this year has been one of our most important. Whatever happens from now, this year the owners have seen us essentially stay in this league twice. For development, the key uncertainty is gone and they can push on with their plans - and enjoy this season's ride for as long as it lasts. The primary goal of 40 points is all but met, anything else is a bonus that they'll enjoy immensely.

As for whether it's our best year ever, I think I'd concur with Joby in that it has to be our most remarkable and probably enjoyable. However, I don't think a club like ours can have a best year ever without there being a trophy in it.

Is it our most successful year ever in terms of results in the top division?

Got to be close hasn't it?

It's certainly been the most enjoyable league year since I've supported us. Last season is one of my favourites and is up there with the cup winning years under O'Neill.

But I guess as others have suggested, that winning a trophy is the ultimate measure of 'success', so it won't be that.

Unless we win a trophy of course. But I'm not letting myself get carried away with the idea of that. FA Cup win and Champions League football?

Now that would be our most successful season ever!!!!!

Assuming City win their remaining fixtures against Manchester City and Liverpool, by my reckoning, they will have accumulated 66 points from the 38 games they will have played throughout 2015.

During the whole of 1970 (incorporating seasons 1969/70 and 1970/71, that is) a total of 73 points were gained in utilising today's system of 3 points for a win.

1970 P38 W21 D10 L7 F55 A34 Pts (in today's terms) 73

2015 P36 W19 D9 L8 F65 A52 Pts 66

So 1970 just shades it.

Well, that's how I added it up when I went to school (unless you know better, of course).

Loved those 1968-71 teams ❤️

Great stats downsouf And a very important point Dunge - in 2015 we have maintained our Premier League status twice, and at a time when being in the top flight is so important because of the TV deal.

Even as a pessimist I have to smile

What were the number of league games played Downsouf - are they comparable or do we need to resort to points per game?

1st January-31st December 1970: 38 League games
1st January 2015-Present: 36 League games

As it's looking the TV money is going straight into the owner's trousers. Who needs to spend big on players?

That's another question, personally I think we have a strong enough squad and would worry if we bring new faces in now to try and bolster a title challenge, anyone remember Newcastle's 'I would just love it' year?

That clears it up then Downsouf - this team is rubbish compared to the one in the 70s!

Let's just clear something up here.

I have produced a set of statistics that prove nothing other than the team(s) from 45 years ago amassed points in one particular 12 month period that, statistically, was running neck-and-neck with the current team(s) over the past 12 month period. Not that they were any better or any worse.

I have no issue with the current great team.

Downsouf - I think my sense of humour failed there a bit. It was an attempt at being funny. I guess 'attempt' was the operative word!!

Money into the owners pocket? Well given how much they have spent on our club i think it will take a few seasons to get that back

How much money will we get if we finish 3rd?

I would definitely agree it's the most remarkable and ive thoroughly enjoyed it.
