Juan Mata?

He's a number 10. He either should be played there or he should be sold. The tracking back thing shouldn't matter if the VG is insistent on playing two DMs

Mata is a favourite of mine, lacks speed of foot but makes up for it with speed of mind. Gets assists and a few goals.
Should only play forward though as he offers nothing defensively.

He has a very good scoring record since joining us.
He needs run centrally and better players behind him like Carrick and one other more mobile, energetic CM.
I am not convinced by MS at all. Was again at fault for the goal last night. Too lazy to track back properly.
Also blame him for Newcastle's equaliser as he was too slow to get out to the ball.

I know I am a broken record about it...

But we need to see:

---------Holding CM-----------
--------Mata, Herrera----------

3 fast, clever attackers in front, and two pacey full backs pushing up. Bingo.

I'd be happy with this..

Carrick Morgan
Young Mata Martial
Rooney

Play that as much as possible

Swap Depay for Young if Young is injured for ages

Ji - I like that if Herrera can be consistent. Not sure he is really good enough for where we want to be. He shows flashes of it.
Also that CM needs to be a proper CM who is disciplined and can read danger.

Lingard is starting to chip in goals and assists, yet Depay and Young always get put in front of him... kind of odd.

The guy deserves a chance, just like the others.

I think to get the best of Mata you need mobility behind him. For me Herrera and MS could be those two and perhaps for the more difficult games you could get Herrera and MS in front of Carrick/Bastian/Blind.

How about this:

Blind
Herrera Morgan
Mata
Martial Rooney

I should add that our full backs should be bombing on as often as possible in that formation with the strikers working from outside in.

This is to get the best out of Mata though and probably would not be my ideal line up.

Ji,I'm not at stretty levels of youth hating but I just can't see it with Lingarf sadly

i hope you realise that is effectively a 352?

our team should not be built to accommodate one player but make best use of a winning formula.

for me that involves full backs bombing forward, wide forwards or winger. The reason why this works is it creates an overload in the wide position (the place with most space on the pitch).

Where does mata fit in all this? Not in the wide position certainly. So maybe as a #10. His biggest downside is that he is very likely to turnover possession to the opposition who employ the right tactic imo. When this happens we are usually at our most vulnerable cos everyone has made 4wds runs anticipating his pass. Against a wanyama a fernandinho matic or kante he he will lose the ball at least 2/3 times and leave us exposed cos of their sheer physicality

I do Ginger.

I like Mata but what I was trying to highlight is that to get the best out of him we may well need to play a formation that we don't like.

However, at least my line up has players in their correct positions so that would be an improvement IMO.

Would've liked to have seen Depay feature at some point last night.LVG handling of Martial has been relatively consistant and ,generally, good. Not so much with regards to Depay though.

Like the fact Carrick came on and literally from the off orchestrated our 3rd goal by passing it forwards !
God,we miss him so much when he's out yet we really shouldn't have to.

is range of passing is one thing none of our other midfielders have. I am not talking about the annoying hollywood passes that while the ball is in mid air allows the opposition to reshape. but that sharp 30 yard ground pass that takes out and entire line of defence.

I always maintain our best midfield is a trio of
--------------Morgan----------------
------herrera------carrick/bastian (not decided)

based on that forward pass alone I will choose carrick over bastian now

He has a good scoring record but Mata is wildly inconsistent imo. Frankly, I don't think he is any more consistent than Nani was and he has arguably become our most overrated player.

Don't get me wrong, Mata played well against Derby but when was the last time he played well before that?

No doubt people will say that the likes of Roo and Mata are suffering due to the system we play - or because LVG is "instructing" them to play poorly but I think it is more accurate to say that our system has looked crap at times because our big name players have been woeful for the most part this season.

Schwienstieger has been abit underwhelming so far for us.He has played within himself to some degree.
So I take Carrick over Bastian all day long at the minute.

posted on 30/1/16

Bastian has been at least as good as Carrick this season imo, though neither has been brilliant..

Morgan has been the bigger disappointment in CM imo. I'm sure he will come good though.

Just don't buy him. People just want to believe he is that player who creates so much and buZzes around but that is far from the truth. He is average and building a team around him is as flawed as building on now around Rooney.

We as a team cannot afford one passenger

posted on 30/1/16

Mata is our most skilful player. Once again made the finish look easy. It'd be a crime to sell him.

posted on 30/1/16

I still prefer Herrera at the head of the midfield, as much as I like Mata as a player.

Also as has been mentioned, we always look better with Carrick's fast forward passes into the attacking players between the opposition lines. It's something we are going to have to replace soon.

Not many players with that quality that I can think of.

I want a lot more from Herrera, BS and MS in all honesty.
Fellaini did ok last night but I want him gone.
