I don't know how to take the "Shooting accuracy" stat.

Of course, it would seem better to get a high accuracy rate than a low one, but i assume this could also include missed sitters and one-on-ones, that would otherwise be added onto the conversion stat?

Just wondering, do penalties count as chances?

All those stats... But actual goals scored ignored

I would have thought so...

Do you consider a shot against the frame of the goal as on target or off target?

I believe the official take on it is that it is off target. However, I can see both sides of the debate. If you also see the frame of the goal as off target, then how do you explain a goal that has hit the post and gone in - technically you have scored a goal from shooting off target.

And the other side of the debate is, if you believe the woodwork is on target, then if you shoot and the ball hits the post and comes out, you have literally had a shot on target, that hasn't been saved, but you haven't scored....

I dont think that fits the OPs agenda here..

Tbh, as silly as it sounds, that can be misleading too

I remember arguing about this regarding Giroud a couple of seasons ago with people bringing up his 20 goal haul vs other strikers - completely ignoring the fact he played like 55 games or something ridiculous

Must say....I hate this 'stat' schitt that crept into football over the last few years,
To me it takes away the essence of the beauty of the game
Watch it-enjoy it...leave the stats to the mathematicians.

I half agree. Some things you can only judge by your eyes but certain stats can be very useful

I would personally consider the woodwork as being off target, along with anything that isn't going to go in the back of the net.

Stats are just a high level overview that can maybe help someone who has been living in a cave for the past X period of time.

One of my mates pulls a bird most weekends but they are mostly absolute monstrosities. His stats show he is a babe magnet but this certainly isn't the case.

What agenda is that then, Chicken?

Everybody knows the goals scored stats already

talking of high level overviews, another example would be a teamsheet.

versus what you see with your eyes.

A team sheet isn't anything to do with stats, it is confirmation of the team line-up .

I think they are useful as a supplementary measure, once you've watched a player to understand consistency and that sort of thing.

A couple of years ago one of the Arsenal coaches, maybe Pat Rice or Boro Primorac or someone, said that they hated the introduction of stats to the game because it's made a lot of players "play for stats" i.e. complete pointless passes, play a lot safer, just so their stats look better, which I thought was a good point

I couldn't agree more. We all know Barca were the ultimate passing team under Pepe, but sometimes I would watch the full back and CB do about 5 one-twos in concession, completely out of sight of any pressure or opposing players, and I just thought to myself then it was purely to make the stats better.

The thing is, they didn’t even need to because they would often have 70/30 possession anyway, but it just made the stats men out there focus even more on how amazing the team were.

Kane I think has had 4 penalties this year making his states really poor

posted on 11/2/16

Can't imagine anybody thinks Kane is in the same class as Aguero.

When it comes to Giroud stats tend to make him look better than he is.

posted on 11/2/16

I don't think Giroud is a bad 9 at all.

He is certainly no world beater, and isn't likely to get better, but he is a solid, goalscoring centre forward

Agreed.....bet it goes ons...bit like some cricketers get accused of playing for they average be it bowling/batting rather than the team.
