Who's to say Mertesacker is going to cut it in the Prem?

He could be another Sqillachi (sp)

Looks good in his home league, but when faced with some of the best players in the world, looks woeful!

Sir, have you heard of the World Cup? I can post a link if it helps. I think 'some of the best players in the world' were in that. Some of them play in 'different leagues' too. Shocker.

To put the offers into perspective, £12m wasn't that good for us.

We paid £5m...down to £7m profit.

We owe villa at least 10%...£6m profit.

Estimate of £2.5m in wages...£3.5m profit.

A half decent replacement would have cost at least double that therefore wiping out any profit.

And don't forget, his release clause is £17m. A figure Cahill was more than happy to agree to in return for his much improved contract.

And anyway...we've signed N'gog and he's miles better than Sturridge.

That seems to be how this thread's going...especially the Gooners.

I think he'll walk for nothing. But if our owner is happy to do this, then it's ok with me.

Assuming we don't pick up £3m ish in January. Again, if it suits our owner.

Has anybody mentioned the mythical cold Tuesday night at Stoke? Yeah, well, can he do one of those? That's the real question.

Dont try that one.

We all know that domestic league football is totally different from tournament football.

Yes, it is. But the point is Mert has faced the world's best and come up trumps before.

Like I've said - we'll have to wait and see how good he is, and whether stumping up the extra for Cahill was a better option or not. Only one of you seems to see this, you're all to keen to tell us what a huge mistake it might be (or 'is' in some cases).

Aren't you worried that he seemed to be a last minute panic-buy?

If he's as good as you're all claiming, why go for Cahill first?

Give Per at least 5 games before you come bk here gloating after a few errors.

No.

"If he's as good as you're all claiming, why go for Cahill first?"

Because Cahill's better and younger, obviously. Are you a bit slow?

But, if as you all claimed, Vermaelen & Koscielny are that good, he wont get in the side will he.

That's what you said about Cahill !!

Maybe, maybe not. He will still get plenty of games - you are aware sometimes players aren't available through injury/suspension/apathy, right? Also, players are sometimes rested - have you not followed football very long, or are you just trying to be difficult?

No one is saying that Cahill is a rubbish player and that he wouldnt do well.

All we are saying is that for some1 in the last year of his contact he was not worth spending 15Mil simples.

Yes u can mention Nasri but who bought him?

Man City the same Man city that got De Jong for 10-15Mil when he had 6 Months left on his contact.

Experience for Germany>Experience for Bolton.

----------

Bit if an unfair comparison, comparing a country to a town!

Cahill has played for England you know?

Danny Shittu has 28 caps for Nigeria.

This is a very strange article. From what I can tell you Bolton fans seem upset that we haven't bought your best defender.

And then you all argue that you can't compare Mertesacker's experience in Germany with Cahill's in the premiership despite the fact that that's exactly what the article does. I'm very confused.

Is shittu going to arsenal as back up then ? Missed that one last night ..... Can see him as an Arsenal type player - after last Sunday

Well...I'm glad we've established that Cahill is better.

My question was aimed at all those who are now saying, 'I'm glad we didn't get Cahill. He's rubbish. Mertesacker is miles better,' etc. etc.

Slow?

Physically...very. Think Danny Shittu with two broken legs.

Mentally...you really don't want to start that battle, sunshine.

Hope it works out for you.

It's not that were upset you haven't signed him, it's just crazy you havent.

As a club I think we genuinely want to see him play t the highest level, something we know we cannot achieve.

Saying that were delighted to keep him, in til January atleast..

I can genuinely say I have not seen a single post that says this.

You will almost certainly have this desire fulfilled at some point - be patient.

mate who has said we did NOT want cahill.

MOST gooners wanted him.

Its just that we got this giant german who is very comparable, and maybe a better fit. We'll have to wait and see.

Also getting into the german squad has a higher quality threshold than nigeria and prob england too. And their certainly coached better too!

Back to my question which keep being avoided, do Araenal play with a high line? As if you do, your not playing to his strengths.
