John McDermott (Head of Coaching and Development at Tottenham ) Talk Overview- MUST READ!!
u/Robzillor2d, 11h
Apologies for the amount of grammatical errors and lack of coherency, I just got everything down as quick as possible.
Source: Written notes from a Pomona College talk in Southern California by John McDermott- Rose Hill Theatre- 22/03/2016
Start of Talk
John says to a member of the audience that he is sitting exactly where Harry Kane sits, always at the front, looking him in the eye and ready for questions.
John accepted an invitation from Pomona College because he sees the commonality between an elite school and Tottenham as an elite football team. He also came here to be challenged and never wants to be complacent as a coach.
Seminar outline:
How he teaches the players to live in an extremely tough environment- injuries, fluctuation in form, being released and outright failure
How he develops the staff and himself- How did he get from an economics degree to coaching Tottenham
How do you identify and develop talent- ‘the gold medallist at 16 is not the gold medallist at 24’
Showed the audience a picture that Pochetinno showed him and which he loves- we all want out lives to be a smooth process- reaching whatever our goal is in a straight line but in reality life is not like that- there are ups and down and we have to keep working. Compared it to the 800 game rule- 200 games 9/10, 400 games managed a 6/10, 200 games dreadful
In order to be a footballer to get those 200 games you need the persistence and character to live through those other 600 games- and he has to try and make the players hardened to cope with that but finds this difficult when you work in a Disneyland training ground- a dichotomy
A picture that he shows all the players in pre-season- a picture of a horse with a man pulling and a man pushing into the water- the environment can be right, the coaches can be right e.g. John and Poch but ultimately it is down to the player- the external factors like coaches and environment can contribute but you can’t make a silk purse out of pigs ear- but they still have a job to develop the players within the best of their ability
Showed a roll of honour of the Spurs academy- the guys who did not quite make and players like Mason, Kane, Rose, Carroll, Bentaleb, Townsend would not be where they are without those guys and they are often overlooked but you need the boys that do not make it to make the ones that do and John is just as proud as every single one of those as he is of the players that do make it- these guys are not just cannon fodder- if Kane can score 30 goals for England then great he is capable of that but for others, it is still John’s job to make sure they are successful even if they are not good enough for the premier league.
John thinks he is a purist and a dreamer, he loves football but he is becoming more aware of the business interests, and at what point do you fall on your sword- and with more and more money coming into the game- clubs treat children like they are Modric or Bale and he thinks English football has got gout- rich man’s disea
Yea see this the other day. Good read.
While he's done well I do believe he's getting abit to much credit for our academy.
Inglethorpe and then Sherwood/Ramsey done wonders and these are players we are now benefiting from atm.
What's going on now is shocking though Ehiogu is terrible dare i say clueless, we are losing good players due to incompetence in taking to long to award contracts.
Hopefully we'll get rid of Ehiogu in the summer & and get a better coach in
Good to hear it was Townsend and Bentaleb requesting U21 games. Shows we are producing players with a good attitude.
Re the bomb squad - fully included, not ostracised (except 1st team obviously). Poch tje man who van do np wrong
Appeared as much to be fair, not heard anyone cane him since they left. Ade had nothing but nice things to say
While it's very easy to praise during good spells, the praise he had for Poch is still very encouraging.
Bringing young players through has so many benefits - team morale, harmony, motivation for other youngsters, financial reward (low wages, large sell on fees). I believe in Poch's model of buying only key players (e.g. Alderweireld), supplemented not with foreign rubbish (e.g. Stambouli) but young talent.
Appears like the club are in a great position currently.

Great read eh lads?
The future is looking good. The only worry is if Poch is on his toes at some point
Far too much credit to John McDermott.
I am not for one second saying McDermott does not have good ideas but talk about piggy backing others success.
Sherwood, Ramsey and inglethorpe are the reasons we are where we are. Ignore Ferdinand did nothing absoloutely no idea what he did other than joke with players in corridors or stand there nodding with Ramsey.
Inglethorpe worked very closely with Damian commoli and originally got the funds between them to improve the academy.
ive explained how it all worked in an article years ago but basically McDermott was stripped of powers, sherwoods was placed above him then after sherwoods, Ramsey, Ferdy left McDermott reclaimed the powers and duties he originally had.
McDermott signed a new contract 2 months ago after originally agreeing to sign for Manchester United.
Our academy would be better to lose McDermott as his blind faith and constant promotion of both clueless egiogu and arrogant McKenna. Is hurting the development of our gifted youth team. (We have some of the best youth scouts in the country nowadays by the way)
We have been linked with youth coach Paul mcgunniss over the last few weeks and we made a ridiculous approach for arsenals best under 15 player we failed but we tried to raid then none the less lol.
LLM, didn't you say before that Sherwood just sat in his office and then came out after Ramsay had done all the work to greet people?

Ramsey done 90% of the coaching but sherwood done loads in getting these players and then keeping them when lots of bigger teams were sniffing around.
