He got rid of dross and largely replaced it with more dross, with net spend of 200 mill
Some of the players we let go aren't dross. Evra, Vidic etc can't be classed as dross. Aging but legends. Evra still playing at highest level too.
Hernandez is definitely not dross. He's lethal. We just didn't play to his strengths anymore. Looked much better under a Fergie led United.
Good article on the whole.
I thought vG did a lot of things right in his time here.
I liked the fact he was teaching our team to keep the ball. And like Hafi regaled time and again, we were the best team territorially and possession-wise we were right up there.
I'm hoping his work has affected the players positively, and similarly to how Moyes' defensive worked impacted on Martinez's first season, I'm hoping vG's philosophy plus Mourinho's motivational techniques are the winning combo were looking for
Personally wish we kept one of Danny or Hernandez. Also Rafael if his fitness wasn't an issue (a huge if).
We bought relatively sensibly, the main issue being the players haven't performed to the level we all hoped.
The dealings may all have been sensible, they just haven't been very good.
12 players in, and to date only 2 of those can be described as unqualified successes, namely Blind and Martial.
If you're happy with 2 out of 12 fair play to you.

But LVG still had to approve them I guess? From what I read he approved Herrera but turned down Kroos, which, well, there you go.

I'm not happy but I'm also willing to give some of those signings more time. I've seen enough from them at other clubs to suggest they can offer a lot more to our club.
I'm not too bothered about Bastian though.

to be fair Evra and vidic leaving had nothing to do with LVG anyway, they had already agreed to leave when Moyes was at the club.
as for Hernandez, yes he is scoring for fun in Germany, but Forlan did the same in Spain.
lets not forget, plenty of people were complaining about Hernandezs overall gameplay long bvefore LVG walked through the door.

Agree absolutely, most of the ones who don't count as unqualified successes are TBCs rather than failures (in which group I would only include ADM, Valdes, and Rojo, though like you I think Bastian has been deeply underwhelming).
Just think it's odd to write an article talking about how "sensible" the signings have been, ignoring that they have been mostly disappointing/underwhelming.
True, I've also said many times that while the signing and sells have in general been sensible I would hope any manager coming in with the money and time LVG had would do just as well if not a lot better, as well as getting far more out of the players available.
was Valdes a bad signing?
id say most definately not.
was he poorly used, most definately.
99% of people on here were more than happy to lay all the blame on LVG and not the players using the old " the buck stops with the manager" cliche.
now all of a sudden its the players who have been poor?
99% of those players signed by LVG were decent signings at the time, and most on here had little argument.
now its time to see if it really was the players, or LVG's tactics holding us back.
I don't think he had much of a say in the ADM, Shaw or Herrera signings. Nothing to back that up though.

Silly me, I thought you really needed a striker at the start of last season

Yeah, he signed one. Silly you indeed
Did he, thought he signed a forward not an out and out striker. Sold another one at the same time and sent one of your youth products out on loan. Fair enough, as long as Man U fans were happy with your striking options at each point in the season.
