To be fair he had all the time in the world to do whatever he wanted. Russia barely turned up and still somehow walked out with a draw.
He will defo be useful for us in that position next season if Jose choses yo use him there.
Obviously he shouldn't start in that position but if we have a lot of injuries I would feel completely comfortable with Rooney playing deep.
Agree with you, he was by far the best player on the pitch. I dont understand why Hodgson did sub him off and let Milner come on.
Wayne Rooney's game by numbers vs. Russia:
100% take-ons
85% pass accuracy
3 shots
2 chances created
1 interception
1 block
It was against Russia, whose midfield was non existent.
Hodgson substitution was w.nk
Rooney did well. Ut no way was he best player on the pittch thought Walker was personally and by some distance.
Bad subs from the manager in all fairness. Vardy should have came on for Kane and just kept their old CB,s at the back.
No idea why he bought Milner on. It was pointless.
I have to say, for a long time I have been dead against Rooney's inclusion in the England squad but today he showed me and many of his other detractors why he has a justified place in the England squad. Sterling on the other hand, flatters to deceive.
I didn't say Rooney was the best player, but that was a good performance from him in an England shirt. I agree he had tons of space to work with, but you only play what's in front of you.
Hodgson fecked it up, no need for any subs, particularly sick-note Wilshire.
I personally prefer Wayne as a CM rather than a #10 these days.
The play is infront of him when he's deeper, and he is able to influence things more.
At #10 for Utd, he struggled as he was often too slow with his back to goal, always given away possession and looked frustrated a lot as the onus was on him to create as well as score.
Playing in CM with someone like Alli pushing on, and Dier sitting is the best option for England. All three played well and dominated, albeit to a poor Russia side, it's just a shame we had no cutting edge in the final phase of attacking play. I'm a big fan of Kane but he was woeful.
Kane was awful VC, I don't know why he's on set piece duty as well. Was screaming for Sturridge and Vardy to come on and run at their defence in the second half.
I remember a few months back some Spurs fans said Kane would displace Rooney quickly and break his goal record for England soon enough. Utter delusion.
He was pretty decent tonight, but let's face it was not a great team he was up against, had plenty of time on the ball. Wait and see how he does against better pressing sides.
I thought he was completely anonymous.
Kane was pants but Rooney didn[t do much more.
2 worst out there
Sterling was absolutely sheeeeet
No composure whatsoever
How much did city spunk on him ?
He was playing against a Championship standard central midfielder. He didn't do anything to convince me he is international quality in that position.
are u fackin kiddin me, what did he do
agree with op, rooney was the best player
but he was never under any pressure, that was the best situation for him to flourish and he did. I still do not rate him as a cm and will not change my opinion cause he did well against a poor russian team.
The time to judge whether or not Rooney is a CM worthy of United is when he comes up against a decent midfield.

Agree
I think in a midfield two he is facking pants, we saw that with Fergie and the two managers after. In a midfield three he might be just above average.
It was similar to the first half against Everton in the cup semi, they stood off him and allowed him to do what he wanted, the through ball to Ali was a good example of this.
He did okay for me, but i'd be disappointed if we lined up with him in centre midfield on the opening day of the season.

We say that Robb, but are Russia really any worse than some of the dross in the Prem like Palace, Watford, West Brom, Norwich, Villa etc?
I'm not saying Rooney is the second coming of Pirlo but he does a good job in cm in my opinion, he dictates the tempo, plays with intelligence and him with Dier and Alli looked balanced and very promising.
We didn't lose the game in midfield today, we played some wonderful stuff. Blame Sterling who was atrocious in possession, Kane who couldn't get into the game (a striker with pace was needed in the later stages to worry a slow Russia defence), and the whole defence who switched off to concede a soft goal.
