Players picked on reputation instead of form. Sturrudge, Wilshire, Rooney to name a few. 100% agree with this post. The Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard thing was the biggest farce of all. Had to shoe horn them all in instead picking the right balance.

I can only envy the players that England have had at their disposal. Half of our squad consists of players playing at either Championship level or players who are deemed not good enough for the English national side, but with Irish parents/grandparents. As well as possibly the worst, most frustrating footballer I've ever seen in Aidan McGeady.

While we're not the greatest footballing nation on Earth, losing in a glorious failure to France feels so much better than what was served up last night.

ah no I agree I wanted England to do well too, but it was pretty hilarious watching Roy all stressed out.

I think england shoudl embrace what they're good at, play direct agressive football like we, NI etc do, they simply can't play football like the germans, Spanish etc.

Oh and 100% agree on McGeady that man is a sham

On the other hand, I've got to hand it to Iceland. What a great defensive performance once again from them last night, but what impresses me most, is just how good they are on the counter attack. They don't create bucket loads, but they're just so clinical, and even at 2-1 up, they still created the better chances.

Stevie G even said it was a mistake to play him and Frank in the CM and one of them should have been dropped.

Rooney should never have been made captain of either United or England. He isn't a leader and as a player, now, he just isn't good enough at the top level.

Fully agree about Rooney.

I think I seen that interview with Gerrard a week or so before the start of the tournament. It's all well and good him saying that now he's retired from International football, and more or less retired as a footballer altogether, but I do wonder if that thought was expressed by him at the time, or did he remain selfish along with the rest of the players and say nothing, just so that he could get a game.

I'm banking on the latter.

I think finding a manager who has the courage to stand up to the establishment (the media, FA, etc) is more important than somebody who is a tactical genius.

Picking players on form and ability rather than on name is not simple. Imagine the fallout a manager would receive if Rooney, Sterling, and Hart got dropped altogether for somebody who truly deserved to be on the team. It would take a sociopath to accept the England job.
