I think he's brilliant, an all time great. I think he'd be even better if he didn't have his weird obsession of proving himself as an outfield player though. I have no issue with him acting as a sweeper, but the nonsense of standing on the hand way line, taking attackers on is just stupid and has cost his teams goals in the past.
he is certainly the best in the world but not faultless. a bit like Schmeichel
I personally prefer keepers like Cech, van der sar, Seaman who dont necessarily have to pull of amazing saves but rather quietly go about their business by being able to position themselves well.
Those type of keepers tend to lead and organise the team better than superman type of keepers.
Too reckless and makes a lot of unforced errors trying to be too clever. I'd put him up there as a top keeper, but give me Buffon, van der Sar, Schmeichel over him any day of the week.
He's a quality keeper. But also abit too smug for my liking. Has great distribution though 👍
Phenomenal goalkeeper.
His own ego is his biggest asset at times and of course can quite easily become his biggest liability.
You can just tell how bored he must get, that he spends most of his time in training practicing hollywood passes, because some of those I'm sure Paul Scholes would be proud of.
Don't even rate him, just a better version of Lloris. He looks better than he is because of his showboating, but he's reckless and risky.
Buffon, Cech, Van Der Saar, Oliver Kahn, De Gea, Schmeichel, just off the top of my head are all better / were better
I think everybody who's commented here has the same opinion as me, in that his showboating actually detracts from his talents as a keeper. He is a great goalkeeper and is arguably the best in the world at pure goalkeeping, but the other stuff he decides to "add" to his game don't benefit him or his team

Unless you're saying Lloris isn't a quality keeper you must rate him somewhat?
In my opinion Lloris is one of the top 10 in the world right now.

And you can add Schmeichel, Shilton, Clemence, Jennings, Banks and many many others.
Dont forget the likes of Banks used to have to save a ball far heavier than the ones used today. Modern goalkeepers would end every game with broken or dislocated fingers if they had those old balls smashed at them rather than the modern lightweight things.
Still not as good a Buffon
Out of the keepers I've seen he's probably top 5 though
Buffon, Kahn, Schmeichel, then probably Neuer.

What a weird conjecture to make. The way people like to lionize footballers and sports men from the past can get ridiculous. What of the fact modern light balls move and swerve far more and makes shot-stopping more difficult?
Yeah I don't buy the heavier ball argument. Because the bottom line is, lighter balls move quicker and demand more from a keeper, all things being equal. And I doubt that any keeper, past or present is worried about broken fingers when diving to make a save.
Not trying to diminish previous achievements, just not seeing the logic
It's like the arguments I have with golf or tennis fans claiming past champions like Nicklaus or Borg or Laver were the bestest ever and had all these amazing achievements DESPITE their terrible equipment while forgetting their opponents were using the same equipment.
Second best in my lifetime. Behind Buffon ahead of Schmeichel.
Banks, Shilton, Jennings, Buffon, Kahn, Schmeichel, De Gea...
Even Southall at his peak was an amazing keeper.
I think some people have forgotten just how great a keeper Schmeichel was. His throwing was something else too.
I still consider Schmeichel the best! Will never forget his performance at St James' in '96. That first half was literally the most I've ever seen us destroyed by an opponent in a half of football. But he stood up to everything, broke their spirit and King Eric did the rest
Overrated but still a very very good keeper.
Just because he can play out and pass doesn't make him a great keeper.
Makes more mistakes than De Gea, too. De Gea is better than him right now.
Agree TopLad. Keown the clown and the BBC way over the top last night. He got lucky when he kicked it into the ref !!!
It wasn't so much he got lucky kicking it into the ref. It was the fact that he didn't keep a cool head and recompose. Instead he ran into the neatest attacker and was lucky the ref was weak. Another ref, and he was in big trouble
Just because he can play out and pass doesn't make him a great keeper.
---------------------------------------------
Nobody judges him as great because he can play out and pass. Else, Victor Valdes would be an all-time great. Neuer is a fantastic all-round keeper. Top shot-stopper, great in one-on-ones and the sweeping role, commanding in the air, great communicator and leader, good at penalties, and yes, fantastic on the ball and his distribution. Sometimes, that all-round fantastic ability becomes a hindrance cos the guy's unrivalled confidence makes him a tad too willing to take too many risks
Makes more mistakes than De Gea, too. De Gea is better than him right now.
----------------------------------
Let's not kid ourselves. If De Gea and Neuer were in the same team, De Gea would rot on the bench. De Gea's a top keeper, but Neuer is different class in all he offers. And De Gea makes loads of mistakes. In the Spain-Croatia match alone, he dropped 2 clangers that should have been punished with goals. For some reason, it just seems he's immune to criticism. He got a lot of sheite when he arrived England, and since he was recognized finally as a top keeper, sometimes it's as if people overcompensate for the harsh criticism he used to get.
