Surely Liverpool need to wait for them to sign for Southampton before they can buy them?

That's funny. And original. Good joke

Slightly strange signing in my opinion. Wijnaldum seemed to be a more attacking midfielder and we already have a few of those - Coutinho, Lallana, Firmino, Markovic and now Mane. We've also got Ojo pushing for game time. Even Henderson and Milner seem to prefer being further up the pitch.

From what I saw last year he seems a decent player just not one I would have envisaged us targeting.

Klavan I know nothing about other than the games against us. We do need another CB though.

Why sign Klavan? I'm not convinced we needed another centre back tbh but if you're going to get one at least get a player that will push for a starting berth.

This is a squad padding signing and we've made far far too many of those in the last 5 seasons. First transfer move where I've been genuinely disappointed in klopp.

We have 2 fit CBs.

It's not much more cerebral than that

Miss the rest of my post manfrom?

You know, how I explained he was a mediocre choice and why bring in a player to simply be squad padding rather than a player to challenge. Otherwise keep one of toure or skrtel

Nah I saw the whole thing. Just answered the question you asked.

We have injuries recently. We need cover.

But why not sign a player who can cover now AND potentially be a starting 11 player.

I've seen Klavan quite a few times and he is mediocre, and hardly has age on his side to improve as he's already 30.

I've defended every single one of klopps signings as I believed they improved the squad and could improve the first 11. This one is not good.

I guess he forgot to call you on this occasion.

Look at it logically, if you can. Klopp is only looking for a fourth, maybe even fifth choice CB when everyone's fit. Skrtel and Toure would have been on big wages befitting of a starting CB. Klopp maybe thought that four CB's would of been enough for the amount of games we have and maybe didn't expect two of them to be injured this early on, hence the need for cover. His wages will be far lower than Skrtel's and Toure's.

Exactly.

Skrtel plus Toure was probably £150k a week.

Klavan is probably £30k a week. He's at his peak with stacks of experience and is unlikely to complain about limited opportunities.

Seems a sensible signing to me. Not exciting, but sensible.

Wijnaldum is more exciting. I don't agree with Can Solo who has listed a load of forwards and called them midfielders.

Wijnaldum can play anywhere in midfield. He is adept at coming from deep and scoring goals, as he showed for Newcastle. He can play as a playmaker as he did in the 2014 World Cup for Netherlands. He's prime age and experience and is better than probably anything we have currently (Can has potential but isn't near his peak yet, and Hendo has had a bad year or so).

If he is as versatile as you say then great, personally I've only ever seen him described as an attacking midfielder and play as one. Essentially in a 4-2-3-1 he'd be one of the 3.

Perhaps Firmino was a bit of a stretch, as he can and has played as a forward, but the rest would also play as one of the 3.

I've only seen Wijnaldum play a full game against us, other than that it's highlights, so perhaps my perception of him is a bit narrow. But it is what I've seen.

I was at Newcastle v Bohemian's here in Dublin on Saturday and Wijnaldum scored, that's more than enough to prove he is ready to play for us.

posted on 18/7/16

We seem to have gone in for him cause the Zeleinski deal has fallen through.

posted on 18/7/16

I don't think Wijnaldum would be one of the three in a 4-2-3-1 for us.

I think he would be box to box in the 2.

He does have that versatility though to play multiple positions.

posted on 18/7/16

He will have to be one of the 2 behind the three, we have far better technical players to play across the 3.

But we may also switch to a 433 and he could be one of the midfield 3.

If we sign him I personally see him as part of a three with Can and Milner. We've tried a number of combinations of three in midfield but we've always lacked balance until this point.

Can Milner as a two can sometimes leave us a bit exposed, a three of Can Henderson and Milner has lacked creativity and goalscoring threat, likewise any combination involving Lucas and Allen.

Wijnaldum-Can-Milner on paper looks to have more of a balance between goals, guile and energy.

It means a front three though if three of Coutinho, Sturridge, Mane and Firmino (also Lallana).Tough call on who would miss out if all were fit, although knowing our luck we will never have that luxury.

He appears to be a shoe-in, in place of the guy we had on loan from QPR last season and whose name, to my eternal shame, I cannot remember.

Jurgen has seen him play for Ausberg sufficient number of times to hold a positive opinion of him. If Jurgan wants him then that's fine by me.

Caulker you're thinking of Jimmy and yeah I agree he comes in to fill that gap in the squad.

we need to sell a few

Rafa won't stand in Wijnaldum's way.

Also I reckon a midfield 3 of Can, Grujic and one other is very solid indeed.

Does anyone else like the fact that I dont know where all the players are going to play?

For so long I have been able to second guess what our managers will do and how we will set up etc...

And contrary to my own opinion it turns out I may not be the footballing genius I consider myself to be!

I trust Klopp, look at his history for building 'teams' and how Dortmund achieved much more than the sum of their parts (at first glance) it was the same with us last year, we played some football and got some results that I would not think possible from that squad.

I have decided to sit back and let him do all the worrying and just enjoy it...

As I have no idea how he will fit all those MF/FW into a team but I bet you he has a damn good plan to give it a go.

Added to this, I know ti has only been pre-season but even so far and with some of the youth squad you can see the style he is trying to create and it is fantastic to watch when it works.
