The 9 Players

I pretty much agree with that bar Semedo, I think he was on the list of nine

IMHO Meggys list of nine that he handed down to MM was:

Mellor
ALF
Semedo
Jesus
Bennett
Roberts
Jones
Batth
Koumas

Sorry but does it really matter? If we've ended up with players who weren't on this magic list then I don't think that gives Megson any mitigation for not going up this year.

Personally, I;m very disappointed with the way transfer business has been conducted and with some of the names we've retained, signed and let go. For me, we should've gone in with £350k up front for Le Fondre before the season started, kept hold of M Morrison, Beevers and Potter and shipped out O'Connor. I also feel there were attacking midfield players available that we should've brought in without waiting until we lost 2 games to loan Marshall. All in the past now though, so let's hope what we have brought in will do the business.

Points wise, I don't think our start is too bad; I'm more concerned with the teams we've lost to and how..

Like Ive siad, I dont think Potter fitted into Meggys style of play, he like more rugged types of CM who battle for the ball and like to get stuck in (ie why he signed Semedo & Jesus). Potter is more of a passer. Also, lets not cry about ALF, I think RUFC were asking for too much for a L2 player in the last year of his contract. We didnt sign him, Reading did, lets get over it and move on, its in the past like you say. I think we have the potential to get up to the Championship and I think Lowe may turn out to be a good signing, it's preditors like him that can get teams out of divisions, i.e. Maclean plus with Marshalls service Madine will have a great season im sure.

I think Lowe will prove a good signing and I agree regarding Potter. Happy to move on from ALF but not sure how you can say £350k is too much just because he hasn't set foot in League One - Reading didn't see a problem so neither should we have.

The ALF thing only became an issue because CoG was signed injured.

Megson will have CoG and Madine penciled in as the two starters so ALF would have become surplus. Lowe will (fingers crossed) do a job while CoG gets over his Jefferitus.

Fair enough if you think 350k is a good amount to pay for Alf thats your opinion which I respect but you have to admit its a gamble, L2 to the Championship is a big step up and it will tougher for him, if he cuts it at that level then good for him & Reading but it was a gamble that MM wasnt prepared to take, esp at 350k + with the budget Meggy has had to adhere to. Dont know the amounts we bid but I'd say 250k + JOC would have been more realistic IMHO (Although RUFC wouldnt have been mad enough to take him)

Plus on the other hand I think 350k for COG who clearly was nowhere near fit was a suprising move, ok Meggy highly rates him and see's him as a key player for us in the future but we could have got somebody else who was fully fit and prolific (And I dont mean ALF) but when he's fit again he may prove crucial for us...we'll see eh

I think you've just said it without realizing Mega. MM was prepared to take a big gamble on an injured player with a respectable but not outstanding goalscoring record.

But, he wasn't prepared to take a gamble on a fit player who really does know where the back of the net is.

Meanwhile we've signed a player in his thirties to save some money.

I hope it all works out but I still think not signing ALF and hanging on to JOC are the two biggest blunders of the summer.

Mega Milan

All transfers are a gamble. League 2 to Championship is a big step up but we're not in the Championship; we're in League 1. League 2 to League 1 is not big deal in my opinion.

I realise it's a pointless debate as the player has gone to Reading but it does bother me that many Wedneday fans seem to think paying £350k for a player is out of the question just because he's only played in the bottom division.

Players who've scored 20+ goals at this level and are the right side of 30 are now costing millions of pounds: money we don't have. It's either take a risk on a player who hasn't got many goals but has played at this level or a player who has scored lots in a lower league. The latter is what I'd prefer and it's pretty standard practise for clubs right the way up to the Premier League, unless you're lucky enough to be Chelsea or Man Utd and can bring in whoever you like.

Yet again, I agree with what you say: JOC and ALF..

I see your point but I dont think COG is injury prone (not to my knowledge anyway), just an injury but ive said before Id've liked to have seen Alf here but GM knows COG has the relevent experience at this level and Alf dosnt, yeah it may backfire in our faces if he proves to be success at Reading, and knowing our luck he will prove to be money well spent and a gamble worth taking. Yeah COG may not have been prolific but Meggy seee's something in him and with the type of team we are it may siut his game better and score more

We still moaning about ALF?

posted on 5/9/11

Yeah I completley agree, we should have signed ALF, i never said we should'nt have but I understand MM not wanting to meet their valuation of him, he wants to run this club properly and I can see why people are saying that we have just paid that amount for COG but cest la vie, he's here and im confident that he'll do a decent job for us.

But THE biggest blunder was re-signing JOC, just cannot fatham out why he is still playing for us, I can only hope that he never starts a game for us again, but if Semedo or Jesus gets injured, I garuntee he'll be in there, how he is 3rd choice CM I'll never know!!

Semado - Yes
Marshall - No
Utchetchi - No
Lowe - No
Lines - No
Batth - Yes
O'Grady - Yes

I think COG was definately one of the 9. We were linked with him very early on remember and the deal was dismissed by Rochdale. It all went quiet and then we went in again and got it done. I dont think it was a case of lets sign this guy as a last resort type of thing.

I also think Meggo got wind of Semedo wanting to move on and I think he will prove to be megsons best signing of the lot.

Again, as others have stated JOC is a questionable choice to resign. But people need to keep an open mind. As fans, we only see what a player can do on the pitch during a game. Now I understand that this is obviously the most important bit but maybe JOC adds something to the team outside of what we see? Something in training or something that meggo likes about him. I dont know, im sure thats probably wrong but Im just trying to think of what the reasons could be.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I've been thinking the same way. Often a worker of any kind is great to have around and creates a happy atmosphere. He's taken a cut in salary, so what the heck? If Meggo wants him at the club.....and for peanuts....then let's leave the lad be! I doubt he'll ever be in the starting line-up other than for tin-pot competitions and he can sometimes prove useful as back-up as was shown by his 2 goals against Notts County in the J.P. Trophy!

like most people im not sure why he re-signed JOC, however he will always get my support whlst he wears the blue and white stripes, i personally think there are worse players at the club ie sedgewick and utchechi who is simply shocking
