Hoof merchants

We hoofed it under LVG. Its just we took another 50 passes after receiving the hoof before we took a shot

I much prefer our style now

Shouldn't get carried away though, Southampton could have easily been 2-0 up before we scored last week. Long missed two good chances and Tadic was inches away from a free header.

LvG had us playing a good range of hoofs though.... from long hoofs (or direct hoofs) to short hoofs along the ground, or weighted hoofs back to the keeper. He got Rooney hoofing to the right wing up from 3 hoofs per game to 7.

Aston Villa - 638 passes per goal

That must've been some goal!

Not to mention Valencia's 'under the radar', supersonic hoofs from the wide right position.

I'm hoping Mourinho moulds us into a great counter attacking side like we saw under Fergie. Was easily the best football we played back then.

Did anyone pass to Robert Huth?

LVG philosophy was to pass teams off the pitch, Mourinho is to go for kill so it isn't suprising. Thats why with LVG we dominated territory like probably never seen before in premierleague era and under Mourinho we will go back to the SAF days of low defensive block with quick transition into attack.

Yeah, we've seen so far that with Rooney, Mata and Zlatan occupying 3 of the 4 attacking positions, we've struggled to counter with pace.

Hopefully Pogba's bursting runs and the introduction of Mkhi will alleviate that slightly.

Which style do you prefer Hafi?

I think with Pogba, Mik and Martial you have enough mobility and speed to counter at pace. Fast counters also work with good passing play which players like Mata can provide.

I prefer a mix between both. The 07/08 side had a bit of both.

You prefer a mix of the brilliant success of Ferguson and the boring crap that LVG gave us?

LvG thought that every problem on a football pitch could be solved by passing

Need quick thinking players for a decent counter attacking side rather than just out and out sprinters.

No good having ridiculous pace up top and on the wings if the guy that picks the ball up at the back takes an age to release it and needs 3 or 4 touches first.

While this is yet another dig at LVG from Robb (let it go mate, he has gone) there are some points that are worthy of debate here none the less.

Some of LVG's teachings to the players will be very useful when we have a one nil lead and Jose wants to shut up shop. And we all know he does this.

Also LVG identified some good young players that Jose doesn't have to send on loan because he knows they can already cut it at senior level.

The other major point here is that SAF played counter attacking football.

I am not sure that is really the right way to describe it. I would like to think SAF played good attacking football that wasn't on the counter. We scored many a great goal that didn't involve as springing the length of the pitch at great speed.

The best SAF United sides could beat you in a pure game of football (front foot or counter attack) as well as beat you in a physical battle. Hopefully we'll get that back sooner rather than later.

posted on 24/8/16

Yh, I thnk Jose is starting with counter attcking/physical.

When we are comfortable with that the attacking element with be introduced

That was the brilliance of Ferguson, he wasn't known as a manager who only played 1 style like so many are today, he did whatever was needed to win and usually did that by playing attacking attractive football. Over the years as football evolved he did too and his ability to keep up with changes as well as often be one step ahead showed his greatness.

Even more impressively that that these passing moves would often start several games prior to the game the goal was scored in..... Takes real ability to see not only a few hundreds passes into the move but also a few weeks down the line...

This is why I'd like to see Lingard in the side as well. He's great in a quick transition setup.

Lingard and Pogba centrally ahead of a holding midfielder, with Mkhi, Ibra and Martial across a wide front three.

Mourinho was shutting up shop over 10 years ago so there is little to be learned from the last manager

If this is in response to VC then that's great but the players we have now weren't with Mou 10 years ago......
