If someone is offended don't wear a poppy but the ones who want to show respect should be allowed to wear one.

The ones who don't want to wear one it's simple shut up and don't show respect that's your choice but to not have the choice is totally incorrect and against what those people died for and what we profess to live in.

A free society.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And if someone wants to question the wearing of the Poppy and what they think it means today you should respect that too

But you haven't shown a bot of respect on this thread to anyone who even slightly disagrees with you.

The stupid thing is I was always taught by my Grandad (who was a Desert Rat in the 2nd world war) that the Poppy was a symbol for all who died in either world war.

His point of view was that he wanted to honour any man from any country who had died in the line of duty...

This surely takes away the political angle. I heard this echoed on the radio this morning...

Yep same for me. The poppy represents the people not the war.

"Thats the problem as i see it though. Its too hard to separate the remembrance of the dead from the politics of the conflict"

That's down to the individual. For me the two are separate

Or in this case, it's down to the governing body who see that there is too much of a gray area in separating (in this case) war from politics, hence their rules.

FIFA shoudn't have an issue really though with the England v Scotland game as both FA's want to do it, maybe if it was a game where the opposition had an issue with it then FIFA should step in but if all sides want the same thing I don't see why they have a problem.

I'd imagine there will be a minutes silence or somethign of that ilk before the game anyway?

But as Manfrom poitns out they have the rules in place and technically it breaks them

I think there's too much emphasis put on wearing a poppy. Yes it's a sign of respect and commiseration, however it's not the only gesture a person can give. Nor should people feel like they are being disrespectful or be viewed as being disrespectful if they don't wear one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree. each to their own for me.

I don't like the way that it's become kind of compulsory in recent years for people in the public eye. My dad always refused to wear one, mainly because he was sick of old farts at the British Legion going on about how great the war was.

As a Celtic fan, I was wondering how Fifa would view poppies after Celtic were fined for waiving Palestinian flags to show support for those who were being killed in Palestine. I'm actually quite impressed that Fifa are showing consistency on the issue.

Not that I think either action should be banned, I think waiving the Palestinian flag and wearing the poppy are both perfectly fine, I just like to see Fifa applying rules consistently.

BS you were waving Palestinian flags because Rangers wave Israeli flags. I can't even be bothered explaining why Rangers fans wave Israeli flags suffice to say it's nuts and it's Loyalist.

wtf has Glasgow to do with either. Just another shabby facet of the disgraceful sectarianism that affects Scottish football.

Among those today who argue that the poppy is political is Harry Leslie Smith, a 93-year-old World War Two RAF veteran, who has not worn a poppy since 2013 because he believes "the spirit of my generation has been hijacked" by today's politicians to "sell dubious wars" in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Smart bloke is Harry.

Why do the Rangers fans wave Isralei flags, I've been googling it but all I can see find is comments sections saying Israels beliefs fall in line with their own?

Sorry should say that it's basically that loyalist beliefs go in line with Isreal and Republican with Palestine, if that's the only reason then that's pretty shambolic.

If one says or believes one thing, the other does the opposite....without much thought or reason....it;s a good way of keeping the hatred ticking over and giving some people relevance in 2016.

Me and brother used to be like that, some boys never grow up I guess.

Some Loyalists in Northern Ireland identify themselves as the lost 13th tribe of Israel. Seriously. Hence the adoption of the Israeli flag by the more adventurous thinkers among them. When the the Israeli flags finally appeared at Ibrox, Celtic fans responded by chanting Hezbollah, and on it went from there. The whole thing is pathetic beyond belief.
